I installed my 2000 square foot, 6 foot deep fish pond in the fall of 2013. I waited one year for the pond to grow some vegetation, and to begin to support an ecosystem. In the fall of 2014 I stocked a pound of fathead minnows. These are the feeder fish for the bass and catfish that I planned to stock. I wanted to give the minnows a head start, so there would be plenty of them to go around.

My personal standard of issuing an Alert is that I have to come across a piece of information that causes me to personally take some sort of action.  While I don’t have any particular piece of news – rather I have the assortment of data points listed in Part 1 of this report plus some that did not make it in – I am finding myself increasing my personal preparations. 

I am being extra cautious these days, weary of sending out yet another report to ‘be cautious, and prepared’ only to have the “”markets”” rocket back up  a few days later for no reason and on no news.

Over the past six years, I’ve enjoyed growing healthy fruits, vegetables, meat and eggs. One part of my diet that I’ve overlooked is fungi. Until now, I hadn’t thought of the benefits of including mushrooms as a regular part of my diet. Mushrooms are high in protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. On the negative side, fresh and dried mushrooms, like Shitakes are expensive. We as gardeners can get around that by growing our own.

I have planted well over a thousand trees and shrubs on my permaculture site. I have tried bare root, potted, long tap root pots, and seedlings. The problem with all of these options for plant material is that it is not the same as a tree that is planted from seed and is never moved. A tree that is seeded in place has a huge advantage in that it has its taproot intact, and it never had to go through transplant shock. The negative is that for certain seed like apples and pears, you will not get a true to type plant. If you plant a seed from a Gala Apple, the apple tree will not be a Gala.
