Economy
In Europe, Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume plans to announce 50,000 job cuts, citing geopolitics, trade barriers, regulation, weak markets, and Chinese EV competition. IG Metall’s Christiane Benner described the plan as a provocation and said trust in management is strained. Volkswagen is in talks with Chinese automakers about assembly in German plants. An Osnabrück project with Rafael was blocked by Qatar. Nomura analyst Andrzej Szczepaniak stated that EU energy and regulatory policies are contributing to political shifts toward populism.
Meanwhile, Western tungsten supplies face shortages. After the Defense Logistics Agency inquired about pricing, Western tungsten was reported sold out years in advance. APT prices remain above $3,000 per mtu WO₃. Japan has been cut off from Chinese supply since early 2026, and new US restrictions limit scrap exports. Two Japanese producers of tungsten hexafluoride halted output on July 1 after China’s 2025 export halt. WF₆ prices have risen 70–90 percent. Visual Capitalist reported tungsten prices rose 622 percent, ranking first among 27 critical minerals. A Chinese producer is expanding capacity, and Western projects such as Almonty’s Sangdong mine are positioning to help address supply needs.
Separately, Beijing has delayed exports of germanium- and quartz-based materials to Taiwan, extending lead times for aerospace, semiconductor, and optical firms. One chip equipment maker halted a production line for months. Piper Sandler initiated coverage of LightPath Technologies at Overweight with a $15 target, citing its BlackDiamond synthetic glass as an alternative to germanium.
Health
The WHO’s latest Influenza at the Human-Animal Interface report states that laboratory confirmation alone, without evidence of illness, is sufficient for countries to report a human infection with pandemic potential. Confirmation uses real-time RT-PCR, which the WHO manual notes can produce false positives from background signal, contamination, reagent cross-reactions, probe degradation, optical crosstalk, and repeated heating.
A Brownstone article disputes the standard viremia model of polio, arguing it does not explain lower-limb predominance, childhood susceptibility, or selective anterior horn damage. The multi-hit hypothesis proposes that lead arsenate and DDT disrupted intestinal barriers, allowing enteroviruses to reach the spinal cord through lymphatics and retrograde axonal transport. Historical arsenical paralysis was indistinguishable from poliomyelitis, and multiple enteroviruses produced similar syndromes.
Geopolitics
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz directed the IDF to increase demolitions in southern Lebanon, describing Shi’ite villages as Hezbollah positions. Heavy artillery and white phosphorus munitions have been used. Katz stated that some villages would be removed, and that non-Shi’ite villages such as Kfar Chouba were allowed to remain but face expulsion if armed individuals are found. Residents have been restricted from farmland. Israeli forces are also striking Ali Taher Ridge, which Israel reportedly intends to occupy.
Relatedly, a UN report states that only 3 percent of Gaza’s cropland remains accessible and undamaged. Satellite data and IDF accounts describe destruction of food production and civilian infrastructure. More than two million people rely on imported aid, with about 30 percent reportedly reaching recipients. The Trump administration has discussed plans for Gaza without its Palestinian population.
Iran War
Treasury Secretary Bessent announced measures targeting Iran and stated that countries continuing business with Tehran would become global pariahs. Iran responded that any country joining the economic measures would be treated as an enemy. Critics suggest this could result in direct economic confrontation with China. Bessent is expected to hold a press conference later today to announce details of the sanctions.
Speaking of sanctions, Georgia declined to adopt the EU’s latest sanctions package against Iran. Georgian Dream MP Tengiz Sharmanashvili said Tbilisi supports international measures only when they serve Georgian interests. Turkey and Serbia also did not join. Georgia’s alignment with EU foreign policy stands at 40 percent. The Financial Times reported that support for recent Russia sanctions has declined, with several EU states seeking carve-outs.
US Politics
Pro-Israel GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers asked AIPAC not to spend on his Michigan campaign against Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, reportedly out of fear of political backlash. After Rogers met AIPAC chair Michael Tuchin, a prepared commercial was not aired. Rogers’ team has discussed redirecting donors to a pro-Rogers super PAC or hiring AIPAC strategists. A Fox News poll found 55 percent of Michigan voters want US aid to Israel to end. An AIPAC spokesperson stated that the Rogers campaign has been explicit that it welcomes support from the group and its members.
Elon Musk plans to spend up to $200 million on the 2026 midterms. Republican committees and aligned super PACs held $657 million at the end of June compared with $334 million for Democrats. The DNC reported a roughly $2 million deficit. Musk spent at least $288 million in 2024 and over $73 million in 2025.
Environment
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum approved cuts to Colorado River water allocations for Arizona, Nevada, and California in 2027 and 2028 under new operating guidelines. The river supplies over 40 million people, 30 tribes, and two Mexican states. A 26-year drought and low snowpack in the 2025-2026 winter have lowered Lake Powell and Lake Mead to levels not seen since 1963. Lower Basin states will face annual reductions of 1.25 million acre-feet: Arizona 760,000, California 440,000, and Nevada 50,000. The three states proposed the plan in May and stated that further cuts after 2028 would severely affect their economies. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs called on other basin states to contribute more. Critics have noted that upper basin states face no equivalent mandatory cuts under the plan.
