Utah Is Setting an Important Example

I have an important update from Utah, where Adam and I have been for the past couple of days.  For years, we've been pushing the basic message that we're on an unsustainable path, and by “we” I mean folks in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and pretty much everywhere else on the globe. And that unsustainable path traverses the economic, energy and environmental landscapes with stop points found all along the way.

As many of you are personally aware, communicating this message is not easy, and sometimes seems impossible.  Often it's met with polite dismissal, sometimes it's ignored, or if we're especially persistent angrily denied.

Since I started delivering this message, I've held a vision of the day when it instead elicits knowing nods because its truths have become self-evident. My proudest day will be when there's no more need to communicate the core ideas in the Crash Course because they'll already be common knowledge.

I cannot wait for the day when, literally, I'll have talked myself out of a job.

Well, we're one very important step closer to that day.

Note:  Okay, that’s taking entirely too much credit, because information flowing from many sources and directions will have done far more to turn the tide than I could ever possibly lay claim to. But I will pat myself on the back for holding one side of a gaudy banner somewhere close to the front of what someday will be a very large parade.

Financial Ready Utah

Okay, here’s what’s transpiring in Utah.  A combined group of concerned citizens and state representatives, some quite familiar with the Crash Course, has begun an initiative centered around preparing for a 'financial earthquake' that they believe is almost certain to hit.  As the president of the state's CPA association puts it, given all of this country's unsustainable economic trajectories, the inevitability is “just math.”

This initiative goes by the name Financial Ready Utah (FRU) and has been started by a non-profit assembly of CPAs and community groups in coordination with state legislators that are providing education, training, policy, and support to bolster individual, community, and state readiness for a financial future that may well prove to be disruptive to the unprepared.
