Artificial Intelligence

Google whistleblower Tristan Harris warned that US nuclear modernization costing $1.7 trillion starting in 2017 is shifting from air-gapped electromechanical systems to digitally networked ones with AI, machine learning, and automation, creating hacking risks, including AI controlling launch decisions or disabling weapons. Old Permissive Action Links were isolated. The Air Force is adding cybersecurity, analytics, automation, ML, and AI to nuclear command and control. Analog is being replaced by digital. Harris called networked nukes with capable AI a very unsafe world.

Energy

Ukraine struck an oil depot in Valuyki, Belgorod Oblast, setting it ablaze, described as the first energy infrastructure hit since President Trump’s energy ceasefire two days earlier, with over 500 drones launched into Russia. Ukraine had said it would burn Russian refineries after US threats to cut intelligence and freeze weapons aid for resuming such strikes.

Meanwhile, Trump announced massive oil, gas, and mineral exploration starting in Greenland, claiming easily available oil greater than almost any land and of high security value. No timeline was provided. A company plans to fully fund up to two exploration wells in the Jameson Land Basin, delayed to winter 2027. Exploration since the 1970s involving major firms yielded no major discoveries. Analysts describe Greenland as remote, inhospitable, underexplored, and very high cost, unlike Venezuela. Greenland’s deputy mining minister Jørgen Hammeken-Holm told CNN the territory is very far away from massive exploration.

Domestically, data center operators that signed a March pledge to cover grid upgrades for their facilities are pushing back on shared costs. A Senate investigation found their commitments apply only to dedicated infrastructure, and they oppose but-for allocation or 80-90 percent minimum bills. Duke Energy’s settlement has them prepay dedicated costs and post collateral for shared transmission that shrinks after 75 percent usage. PJM wants new large data centers to bring their own power from 2027 or be first curtailed, drawing opposition. A third of transmission and half of distribution infrastructure is near or beyond useful life. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission rejected most of PJM’s large-load interconnection proposal, including rules that would have new loads without dedicated capacity connect but be first curtailed, finding the approach potentially discriminatory.

Geopolitics

Iranian officials have warned of possible ground invasions of Gulf neighbors if the US restarts major bombing after the midterms, with IRGC operatives potentially penetrating countries to deter a US assault and punish allies, according to reports. Satellite images show strengthening of nuclear sites and borders. Officials said citizens are being prepared via paramilitary anti-aircraft training, rallies, and kindergarten stories. Officials hinted at targeting the UAE, data centers, and cables. Hormuz vessel attacks hit an October record after a July pause in US raids.

Meanwhile, a source said a Houthi ballistic missile struck Aramco headquarters in Dhahran or sent debris there, as Saudi forces intercepted missiles over Dammam, Dhahran, and elsewhere with shrapnel in a residential area. The coalition warned of Sanaa fuel station evacuation ahead of strikes, while Houthis warned of evacuations near Aramco sites, Riyadh airport, and a refinery. The airport has stayed closed after 13 were killed in weekend attacks. Tit-for-tat includes Saudi strikes on Sanaa sites, and the US is reportedly providing intelligence but otherwise staying on the sidelines. The Saudi Energy Ministry stated that an administrative building was hit, causing a limited fire with no casualties.

Separately, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman rejected Prime Minister Netanyahu’s US-mediated offer for Israel to join the Yemen fight against Houthis, citing feared domestic backlash. Netanyahu condemned the Riyadh airport attacks. The countries have cooperated against Iranian influence, with Israel previously bombing Houthis.

In Ukraine, SpaceX capped StarShield military Starlink terminals at 100 mph, affecting drone strike and interceptor missions, with some canceled. The policy bars remote drone piloting and military activity beyond recreation. It occurred as Kyiv struck Russian refineries amid US threats to halt intelligence sharing.

Economy

Paul Tudor Jones said he will be short all of 2027 due to what he called the most negative US equity flow picture since 2002 from an issuance and lockup flood like 1998-2002. 2026 issuance may top the 2021 $540 billion record. Goldman’s Ben Snider sees $1.7 trillion lockup shares plus $600 billion issuance in 2027, the largest net supply rise since 2000, but does not expect it to derail the bull market given over $1 trillion H1 2026 household and foreign buying, earnings growth, and falling rates. Buybacks may reach $1.7 trillion.

In other news, Bank of America received over $1.21 billion in penalties, the Treasury’s third-largest and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s record, for Bank Secrecy Act violations after failing to report over $5 billion in suspicious transactions, including over $1 billion in priority national-security risks such as Chinese money-laundering networks and border illicit finance. The Treasury said it prioritized revenues over compliance, waited for inquiries, let activity accumulate, and ignored red flags. After a 2024 cease-and-desist without a fine, it failed to escalate for more than a year, according to the Treasury. The Office of Foreign Assets Control settled $11.6 million for 475 sanctions violations. The bank admitted the BSA violations. A Bank of America spokesperson said the bank has invested billions of dollars in technology and dedicated thousands of employees to combat financial crime and is committed to completing the work required to address the issues.

US Politics

An Ohio jury found blogger D.J. Byrnes guilty of sending Senator Jerry Cirino a crude Shrek meme and text calling him Young Mussolini after Cirino dropped a Senate president bid. Cirino personally requested charges from his hometown police and emailed a complaint. The arrest-warrant judge had Cirino contributions and endorsement. Byrnes was arrested at the Statehouse and held for 23 hours, then fined $200. Lawyers argued the political satire is protected by the First Amendment. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression said the government cannot generally punish offensive speech to officials and the image was protected mockery. On the other hand, Cirino maintained it protected his rights as an individual.

Health

As it relates to COVID vaccines, journalist Sharyl Attkisson detailed what she described as flaws in a 2021 study that grouped non-compliant Amish with guideline-following Mennonites, skipped the largest Lancaster community, and headlined excess deaths despite similar rates to US trends. 2024 corrections clarified tables and an abstract line but retained the headline. Data was withheld contrary to reproducibility norms despite public National Science Foundation funding, according to Attkisson. She said results showed no extra harm from rejecting shutdowns and vaccines.

Privacy & Surveillance

House Speaker Mike Johnson pledged a lame-duck vote after elections on the Protection Against Mass Surveillance Act barring federal agencies from accessing, buying, or funding automated mass surveillance like Flock cameras, facial recognition, and biometrics. Violating data must be deleted within 30 days and cannot be used as court evidence. However, locally paid cameras would remain uncovered. The DOJ argues public driving lacks Fourth Amendment protection. An Oklahoma federal judge found warrantless plate searches unconstitutional mass surveillance.
