Economy
The U.S. and Japan conducted coordinated intervention to reverse months of yen losses, with the New York Fed selling euros to buy yen and lifting the currency to around 157.40 per dollar after it had approached 40-year lows. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the yen as very undervalued and excess volatility as unhealthy, while a Coin Bureau analysis warned that a rapid yen rally risks unwinding one of the world’s largest carry trades. Investors who borrowed cheap yen to fund purchases of stocks, crypto, and other higher-yielding assets could be forced to sell, potentially triggering a broader global market selloff if the move proves disorderly rather than gradual.
Geopolitics
Milian Adams of the Prepgroup blog opines that the Fourth Turning Global War has entered its terminal phase, with fiscal 2026 deficits of $2.3 trillion, daily war costs of $1 billion, $113 billion in direct expenses already incurred, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve at 305 million barrels, Patriot interceptors at $2 million per shot, national debt rising from $36.2 trillion to $39.5 trillion in eighteen months, and the 10-year Treasury yield at 4.64%. He projects that by Q4 2026, the reserve will hit technical minimums, triggering energy-price spikes, cascading defaults in transport and logistics, and food-distribution failures in major cities, while the 2026 midterms unfold amid 6-7% inflation and visible military setbacks. By mid-2027, Adams warns, the global food system faces structural breakdown and mass migration as the dollar’s reserve status erodes into severe stagflation.
Energy
U.S. commercial crude inventories fell 7.2 million barrels last week, and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve dropped 3.8 million barrels to 307.7 million. Refineries operated at 97% capacity.
Meanwhile, the Department of Energy selected Utah, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Idaho for potential Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses. Each site could attract up to $50 billion in investment. Texas and New Mexico were not chosen.
Iran War
President Trump posted on Truth Social that a planned strike on Iran was postponed after indications that terms for reopening the Strait of Hormuz had been reached. Meanwhile, Gen. Alexus Grynkewich notified the Pentagon that available Navy destroyers are insufficient to continue shielding Israel.
US Politics
A Department of Energy letter obtained by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) states that Bill Gates held Q-level clearance from the Department of Energy between 2014 and 2021. Reportedly, this level of clearance is typically only given to people involved with nuclear weapon design. Paul entered the letter into the Congressional record during a Senate hearing and linked the clearance to gain-of-function research funding.
A Gallup poll reports public confidence in higher education at 38%. Jonathan Turley has stated that political indoctrination, cited by roughly one-third of respondents, is the leading reason for distrust. Turley notes that 9% of professors at the top 50 law schools identify as conservative. Some observers attribute the trust decline primarily to economic factors such as student debt and poor return on investment rather than bias.
Health
Three Canadian physicians published a paper in the New England Journal of Medicine proposing that euthanasia patients could be killed by organ removal. The authors argue that the dead donor rule’s sequencing is no longer morally required. Critics, including Conservative MP Leslyn Lewis and bioethicist Kerry Bowman, have warned of ethical risks. Euthanasia expansion to the mentally ill is scheduled for 2027 under Bill C-7.
