Artificial Intelligence

The Trump administration partially reversed its June 12 export-control order on Anthropic, permitting the release of Claude Mythos 5 to a limited group of cyber-defense and infrastructure firms. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that safeguards now exist for trusted partners, while Fable 5 remains restricted. The Pentagon had designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk in March after the company declined to grant unrestricted government access to Claude.

Similarly, OpenAI stated that its GPT-5.6 series will be released only to a small group of government-pre-cleared partners, at the request of the Trump administration. The company described the step as temporary while officials develop a review framework under the June 2 executive order.

Meanwhile, Anthropic hired Stanford economist Chad Jones to its in-house institute. Jones authored a 2023 NBER paper that calculated, under log utility, a roughly 1-in-3 cumulative probability of human extinction over 40 years could be rational in exchange for a 2-in-3 chance of raising living standards 55-fold.

Geopolitics

Ukraine reported strikes on Russia’s Titan-Barrikady weapons plant in Volgograd using domestically produced Flamingo cruise missiles. The regional governor confirmed ten wounded and damage to production lines. Ukrainian forces also struck an oil pumping station serving Moscow. Russian forces also launched 1,400 attack drones, 1,500 guided bombs, and 19 missiles at 15 Ukrainian regions over the past week.

On that note, President Zelensky approved a 40-day influence operation involving long- and medium-range strikes. Western intelligence officials cited by The Guardian stated that Moscow may respond with a limited hybrid provocation against NATO’s eastern flank.

Meanwhile, the US Navy escorted a tanker through the Strait of Hormuz using AWACS, fighter jets, an MQ-4C Triton, and a P-8 Poseidon. Commentators have pointed out that the expense of such a military escort vastly exceeds the toll charged by Iran.

Health

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz stated that more than one million people are enrolled in Obamacare without a Social Security number on file. They described the enrollments as a fraud indicator involving applications submitted with stolen or fabricated identities. CMS reported that it has cancelled thousands of such policies and will require government-verified information for agent payments. Critics have argued that some enrollments without SSNs involve legitimate cases for certain legal immigrants using alternative verification.

Valerie Anne Smith has warned people on X of the presence of “meat glue” (transglutaminase) in meat products sold in the U.S. The FDA classifies transglutaminase as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) when products are cooked thoroughly. A Kansas State study found E. coli O157:H7 concentrated along glue lines in restructured steaks. Other research has linked the enzyme to celiac and autoimmune conditions. The global market is projected to be $1.21 billion by 2034. The enzyme is reported as FDA GRAS and harmless when inactivated by heat, with proper cooking to 160°F internal temperature advised for restructured products.

British Politics

Equalities Minister Olivia Bailey introduced a draft bill that would criminalize conversion practices related to sexual orientation or gender identity, with penalties of up to five years in prison and unlimited fines. Critics have stated that the wording could apply to parents, teachers, and doctors who question a child’s proposed transition or reference findings of the Cass Review. Government statements indicate that only abusive acts causing serious harm are targeted, with normal family conversations remaining protected.

In other news, council planning officials in some areas have directed residents to remove home air-conditioning units, citing Net Zero building rules that classify active cooling as a last resort. One Camden resident was instructed to remove two units and use windows and balcony doors instead. The London Plan directs boroughs to discourage air conditioning on grounds of energy use and micro-climate effects. Roughly 3 percent of UK homes have air conditioning. Enforcement is described as limited to specific planning violations rather than a national prohibition, with a “common-sense” approach expected.

Canadian Politics

Canada recorded more than 120,000 departures in its latest emmigration tally. Commentators on X have highlighted that the departures include a high share of working-age professionals, entrepreneurs, skilled tradespeople, and young families.

Privacy & Surveillance

Google is testing a reCAPTCHA system that requires users to activate their camera and scan 21 points on their hand. The company states the system extracts 21 hand-landmark coordinates for liveness detection, and that footage is deleted and not linked to identity or shared with third parties. Skeptics believe this to be an invasion of privacy that could be easily abused.
