After the entirely illogical FUKUS (France, UK, US) bombing of Syria’s alleged chemical facilities, you’ve probably heard very little coming out of Syria in the MSM.
The reasons are many, but one of them isn’t “Mission Accomplished.”
These include:
- The whole thing was an embarrassment; as it was based on flimsy (if not faulty) evidence that a chemical attack had (a) occurred in the first place or (b) was conducted by Assad’s forces, and
- the strike pointed out some very serious weaknesses in the capabilities of the combined FUKUS forces to lash out at a small country with high tech missiles.
The lack of logic in conducting this strike was stunning.
Here was Theresa May’s official statement immediately afterwards:
“Together we have hit a specific and limited set of targets.
They were a chemical weapons storage and production facility, a key chemical weapons research centre and a military bunker involved in chemical weapons attacks.
Hitting these targets with the force that we have deployed will significantly degrade the Syrian Regime’s ability to research, develop and deploy chemical weapons”
First, there were no chemical weapons or precursors found by the OPCW in the rubble of the “production facility.”
Second, that facility is located in the heart of a residential district of Damascus. Bombing it would have been a major disaster if it had been loaded with chemical weapons.
So, Theresa May’s logic seems to be: “We needed to show Assad that gassing a few dozen people was a very bad idea. We did so by targeting a place we suspected was loaded with deadly chemicals and located in a densely-populated area risking thousands of deaths.”
Who else finds that confusingly illogical?
Third, and far more serious, it seems that very few of the missiles actually made it to their target. The US claimed 'complete success' – 105 out of 105 made it on target – but that’s clearly not the case. At least two relatively intact missiles were gathered up and shipped off to Russia.
For their part, Russia and Syria claimed that 71 of the incoming missiles were shot down.
