The Trouble With Natural Gas

One of the areas where there's an overblown amount of overtly politicized and outrageously propagandized information is shale natural gas (NG).

The US, for obvious geopolitical reasons, would love to supply Europe with NG and cut out Russia. But as we'll soon see, the basic facts just don't back up that desire just yet.

However, the fervor to use up the US' supplies of shale NG has been so intense that a huge number of industries have switched over to natural gas from other fuel sources. Collectively, they've made gigantic multi-billion dollar investments based on cheap gas being available far into the future.

I think there's going to be more than a little bit of disappointment lurking there for many.

Here's a recent comment made within the thread to the podcast with Lacy Hunt that I'd like to respond to directly ion this matter.

I've just heard that TVA is going to make some changes in it's generation of electricity.  'Down with coal' is the plan in place for closing the Memphis TN Allen coal fired power station.  These forward thinking leaders are replacing this with —–wait for it—–a gas fired plant.  Brilliant!  Now if we can only start to export some of that natural 'fracked' gas and get the prices up to world market rates the skyrocketing cost of electricity in the mid south will surely drive all citizens to solar power quickly.

Well, it's all but certain that NG prices are going to head up from here due to good ol' supply and demand imbalances.

[quote=Rector]Didn't we cover dropping CAPEX not too long ago?  If that is true, this might spurn additional cuts in CAPEX which could drop future production levels...
