The Politics (and Evolutionary Basis) of Fear

Fear is being used to advance a set of political and corporate agendas.  Sound ‘out there?’  It’s really one of the oldest political maxims stretching back to ancient Greek times and used extensively and with increasing effectiveness ever since.

As I look around the world, I see more and more social unrest.  Unfortunately, I see it as both on the rise and intentional.

It was called ‘divide and rule’ as far back as Macedonian times with the maxim  “divide et impera” attributed to Philip II of Macedon (the father of Alexander the Great).  This practice was utilized by the Roman ruler Julius Caesar and the French emperor Napoleon.

More recently by the British, well, pretty much everywhere. In the Middle East, they teamed up with the French to draw the infamous “Sykes-Picot line” which placed dozens of different tribes and two ancient warring religious sects within the same borders.  This was anything but accidental.  Much has been written about the practice of “divide and conquer” and it’s taught in schools.

Those practices are now being leveraged by the powerful and used on ourselves.  Covid-19 is a crisis ‘too good to waste.’  Fear is the weapon, and we are the targets.

Again, is this a too-jaded view?  Hardly; it’s just how politics and business operate.  If you want people to buy your new program or widget, you have to motivate them to adopt your position.  You can try appealing to their intellect and reason (difficult) or you can pluck their ancient brains with a plectrum of fear and get the same results, only faster and easier.
