Disruptions and Results

Election Day disruptions were reported in Michigan, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and other states. Wayne County, Michigan, had power outages until about 20 minutes before polls closed, along with tabulator malfunctions. A Kansas site reportedly had about 100 paper ballots when about 1,000 were needed. Pennsylvania voters reported jammed scanners and emergency boxes. Fulton County, Georgia, voters reported receiving fake texts claiming their polling locations had changed, and scanner failures during early voting affected over 1,000 ballots. Other reports included a bomb-threat evacuation in Ohio, an overflowing California drop box with ballots placed in a minivan, and Virginia mail-in ballots submitted in someone else’s name. Republicans called for paper trails, observer access, and audits. Officials said the procedures have been used for years without proven outcome-changing fraud.

Voting disruptions notwithstanding, the blue wave swept the nation at nearly all levels of government. Democrats won the House and Senate, flipping 6 Senate seats and 15 House seats, the largest Senate net gain since 2008, according to the reported tallies. Kansas elected Adam Hamilton, its first Democratic senator in 94 years. Texas elected James Talarico, its first Democratic senator since 1988, over Ken Paxton. Gina Hinojosa defeated Greg Abbott and became the first Democratic governor in more than 30 years (and the first Latina governor). Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Senate race and became the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate. Democrats flipped Senate seats in Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Iowa, including Sherrod Brown. Xavier Becerra became California’s first Latino governor since 1875. Texas Democrats also won all five major statewide races. Ilhan Omar won a fifth term in Minnesota with about 77% of the vote to 16% despite the federal investigation into her family’s immigration history.

The Democratic Socialists of America were projected to more than triple their House bloc, with seven DSA-backed winners, up from two. New York was projected to have a 15-member socialist bloc in Albany, which DSA said would be the second-largest such state-legislative delegation in U.S. history behind Wisconsin in 1919. Gains were also reported in Georgia, Kentucky, and Vermont; a claimed Florida flip remained unconfirmed. NBC projected DSA-backed Janeese Lewis George won D.C. mayor with 82.37%.

President Trump told The New York Times he would accept the results and that Republicans would have won in a landslide if he had been on the ballot.

Drivers

NBC exit polls found that about 74% of voters said the Iran war was a crucial or major factor in their congressional vote. Democrats won 63% of those voters. On military action against Iran, 37% called it the right decision (91% of whom voted Republican) and 63% the wrong decision (82% of whom voted Democrat). The Times of Israel reported Trump acknowledging that the Iran war contributed to Republican losses because voters would not accept high gas prices.

Separately, a Fox News Voter Poll found that 39% of voters nationally named the economy as the most important issue facing the country heading into the 2026 midterms, while 32% pointed to the state of democracy. Immigration was cited by 14%, followed by health care at 8%.

Echoing this, Governor Ron DeSantis said polls showing Democratic gains matched Republican internals. He cited higher gas prices, dislike of the Iran conflict, inflation, and disorder in D.C.

Further, Ed Dowd argued that the election results were not a Democratic mandate but a rejection driven by high everyday costs and inflation for average households. Official statistics failed to match what people experienced at the grocery store, the gas pump, or when trying to buy a home, with majorities saying the economy works mainly for the wealthy. Only about a third of Americans believed the administration had kept its promises better than recent presidents, as elevated prices left ordinary families struggling relative to official claims.

Demographics

Exit polls showed white men as the only racial group that leaned Republican, at 55% Republican. White women voted 48% Republican and whites overall 51%. Every other racial group voted predominantly Democratic. Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a September ad depicting a lazy, fat white male gamer as a welfare recipient. Rep. Ashley Hinson said young men playing video games in their parents’ basements should not be mooching off the federal government.

Exit polling also showed Jewish voters backing Democrats 67% to 32% despite the administration going to war with Iran. The State Department said the action was launched at the request of, and in the collective self-defense of, its Israeli ally. Trump said he had the highest approval rating of anybody in history in Israel.

Reactions and Implications

Rep. Thomas Massie said the results were not about placing faith in Democrats or socialist principles but about holding Republicans accountable for betraying their promises. He said Republicans needed to put Americans first, not start another war, and prosecute sex traffickers.

Despite the rebuke of forever wars, Clayton Morris of Redacted predicts the new Democratic Congress will continue funding America’s wars, as Democrats did after the 2006 midterms, while directing its fiercest opposition at the president’s personality. In short, he believes that Democrats will keep the wars going amid political theater at its worst.

Domestically, the election results may have lasting effects on the Supreme Court. DeSantis pointed out that Democrats gaining control of the legislature means, in his view, a zero chance of confirming a worthy successor to Justice Thomas and/or Alito during Trump’s term, with the chance in a 2029-2033 GOP administration also probably zero.

Economically, the outcome of the Texas election could have implications for the data center space. In Texas, where roughly 20% of America’s data centers are planned, Democrats won the Senate and governorship. James Talarico campaigned on requiring large energy users to pay for their own grid infrastructure, repealing a sales-tax exemption, and allowing communities to reject projects. Greg Abbott’s pause on new data-center connections in August was evidently insufficient for voters.

Lastly, Martin Armstrong believes that Democrats will eventually “self-destruct” and that a shift to a third party will occur. He stated, “The Democrats have to win to show the average person that neither side matters.” Does a third party have a chance in 2028? Time will tell.
