Today, the pundits are a-buzz making sense of the latest lackluster jobs report. Expect much hand-wringing over the impact of the 'polar vortex' and that Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow.

But most of us care more about the state of one particular job: our own. How relevant is this latest bit of data to that? Not very.

So, to better understand the trends in the work environment most likely impact our own paychecks, it will help to look at another bellwether similar to our fuzzy groundhog friend: AOL.

Like many concerned about the growing credit bubble, Jim Bruce did his best to warn family and friends about the looming risks leading up to the 2008 financial crisis. Not many heeded him.

Jim, though, had not only positioned his portfolio defensively for such an event, he also managed to make profits by betting against the stocks in overly leveraged financial institutions. But it's what he did with the money he made that's the interesting story here.

In a recent article, I noted the various signs that things are unraveling at the periphery. In the comments that followed, plenty of people (myself included) expressed the belief that the various Powers That Be are doing everything they can to limit the damage as much as possible.

After a full weekend of burning up the phone lines and the midnight oil, the central banks of the world seemed to have calmed things down a bit by Tuesday (1/28/14), as evidenced by directional reversals in the prices of various currencies, gold, and stocks.  Everything that needed to head back the way it came, from a central banker perspective, was headed back in the "right" direction.

I'm half-heartedly watching the State of the Union address right now. What a cynic I've become.

My younger self would be shocked and saddened to learn how I've come to view these annual addresses as little more than a game of charades. The President (not just Obama, but his predecessors, too) reads a carefully and expensively constructed script designed either to elicit self-congratulatory applause from the echo chamber side of the hall, or to lob political harpoons into the other.

But in the end, it's nothing more than a game of words. And the real issues that desperately need addressing get ignored, glossed over, or showered with pablum and over-promises that will never materialize.
