Both Chris and Mish are pleasantly surprised by the rejection with which voters are treating 'establishment' candidates so far in this election cycle. Not that the counter-establishment choices are great, mind you; but the yearning for candidates outside of the status quo is a required — and welcome — milestone on the path to replacing the failed party systems currently entrenched in our modern political system.
Like them or not, the performance of Trump and Sanders to-date reflects a deep-seated dislike for politics-as-usual. Perhaps we are closing in on a time when enough voter sentiment will shift to open the door for real political change? Don't hold your breath… but at the same time, don't give up hope, either.
These anti-establishment players will be helped if the economy tips into recession during the campaign (which Mish and Chris think it very well could). If those running the show send the economy back into a ditch so soon after 2008, the appetite of the voting politic for more of the same — especially if bank bailouts attempt to return — will be nearly non-existent.
