Japan’s day-ahead power prices rose 20% in one week to $0.16/kWh, the highest since January 2023. Spot LNG for October delivery into northeast Asia reached $22.50/MMBtu. Some Asian buyers have increased coal use due to higher gas prices.
Separately, Dutch front-month gas futures reached €67/MWh on Monday, the highest level since early 2023. Goldman Sachs analyst Samantha Dart stated that if LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz recover only gradually through 2027, December 2026 TTF prices could exceed €100/MWh. European storage stood at 61.68% versus a seasonal norm of 72.5%. Some analysts have noted mitigating factors such as increased U.S. LNG exports this year and the potential for a warmer winter to ease demand.
Meanwhile, Iran announced a gas discovery in Fars province estimated at 7.5 trillion cubic feet, with 73% considered recoverable. Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad said the field equals one South Pars block and could supply gas for 15 years. Repairs at South Pars, damaged in prior strikes, are reported 70% complete, with full restoration expected to take at least three years.
Turning to crude markets, TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné stated that shipping a supertanker through the Strait of Hormuz now costs roughly $20 million, or about $10 per barrel. He noted that crude continues to move through the strait and that the refined-products market faces separate pressures. He further noted that it’s “very strange” to see such a bearish crude oil market at the same time as a very bullish refined product market. One possible explanation he suggested is that Gulf nations are pricing crude at a heavily discounted rate to incentivize taking the risk of sailing through the Strait in pursuit of substantial profits.
In the US, Martin Armstrong used a massive power outage in northwest Indiana as an example of America’s decaying power grid. Tens of thousands of customers remained without power after an August 11 storm with 99 mph winds caused the largest outage in NIPSCO history. As of August 20, roughly 68,000 customers were still affected, with full restoration in Gary possibly delayed until August 25. Crews in Gary alone must replace about 300 distribution poles and 44 transmission poles. Governor Mike Braun declared a statewide emergency and activated the National Guard.
Economy
Raymond James analyst Savanthi Syth lowered earnings estimates for several U.S. airlines after Gulf Coast jet fuel prices rose 39% quarter-to-date through August 19. Her revised 2026 forecasts include a $2.43 loss per share for JetBlue (which could be facing bankruptcy), a 51-cent loss for American Airlines, and $5.75 earnings per share for Delta, all below consensus. TSA checkpoint throughput declined 2.6% year-over-year in the current quarter, indicating that airline costs may be going up during a time of decreasing demand.
Iran Sanctions
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced “Operation Economic Outcast,” an escalation of sanctions targeting Iranian technology, gold, aviation, shipping, and digital assets, with threats of secondary sanctions on foreign entities that continue doing business with Tehran. While Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi dismissed the measures as an admission of U.S. military limitations, Bessent himself cautioned that immediate sanctions risked “blow[ing] up the global financial system,” prompting him to offer a short “cure period” instead. Analysts warned of severe blowback: Peter Schiff said the campaign “will not only fail” but that “the economic noose that actually tightens may end up being the one wrapped around our neck,” while NIAC’s Ryan Costello argued it risks further undermining U.S. and regional security as well as the global economy. Chinese officials have stated that economic wars and maximum pressure are not the solution and warned of potential escalation and disruption to the global economy.
Artificial Intelligence
An investigation found that the Hanover Institute for Public Policy is a fictitious think tank created by Piro, Inc., to produce content engineered to influence AI chatbots with favorable views of Israel. The firm received $900,000 through the Israeli Government Advertising Agency via Havas Media, and since August 6, the site has published over 100 unbylined reports. GPTZero flagged 11 of 12 sampled articles as AI-generated. Piro founder Daniel Rosenberg has offered services to optimize content for large language models. Israel separately awarded a $46.5 million contract to Brad Parscale to generate pro-Israel material. Piro founder Daniel Rosenberg has described the effort as putting accurate, sourced facts into the public record to counter misinformation.
In other AI news, Sam Altman said on the Founders podcast that his earlier timeline for economic effects after GPT-4 was incorrect and that disruption has occurred more slowly than expected. He states this is “good news” because it will cushion the economic and societal hit from rapid job loss. OpenAI is reportedly preparing an IPO at valuations up to $1 trillion. BIS data indicate AI capital expenditures now exceed those seen in prior investment cycles, including the dot-com period. Nvidia committed roughly $7 billion to startup Poolside to license intellectual property and retain engineering talent.
Privacy & Surveillance
Catherine Austin Fitts presented a checklist of actions indicating that the Trump administration is rapidly advancing a digital control grid. She noted 18 executive orders and 11 DoW directives in its first 377 days, along with the GENIUS Act enabling programmable stablecoins that can freeze accounts and integrate with Palantir. She also cited REAL ID and biometric expansions, major funding for AI and immigration enforcement tools, large Palantir contracts, data-center and surveillance initiatives, and moves toward all-digital federal payments and crypto integration. Fitts observed that no action has been taken on $21 trillion reported missing from HUD and DOD accounts, that FASAB 56 remains in effect, and that Epstein files have not been released. Some accounts have framed related policies as advancing U.S. financial or security interests.
The U.S. Army disbanded the Third Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, a 600-soldier unit based in Europe that was formed last year to incorporate drone-warfare lessons from Ukraine, according to CBS News. Acting Army Chief of Staff General Christopher LaNeve returned the unit to standard airborne roles. Russia is forming an independent unmanned systems branch with a target of 210,000 personnel across 1,000 units, while Ukraine aims for 80,000 personnel, including 35,000 drone pilots. Both countries are producing 600,000–700,000 drones per month. A U.S. multinational task force under CENTCOM has a few dozen personnel and drones and a goal of 200,000 by the end of 2027, with current monthly production around 10,000. Reports indicate that 97% of casualties in the Ukraine conflict result from drones, artillery, and missiles before direct contact occurs.
Danish researcher Poul Thorsen, one of the scientists whose research is used to “prove” that vaccines do not cause autism, is scheduled to enter a guilty plea on September 1 to charges of stealing more than $1 million in CDC grant funds. Between 2000 and 2009, the CDC awarded over $11 million to Danish agencies for autism and related research. Thorsen is accused of submitting invoices with a forged CDC signature between 2004 and 2008. Balancing views stress that the charges are strictly financial, with no government allegations of data fabrication or scientific misconduct.
