Iran War – Military Developments

A US-flagged oil tanker was reportedly destroyed in the Persian Gulf hours after President Trump urged tankers to enter the Strait of Hormuz. The incident followed Iran’s blockade, which reportedly reduced tanker traffic from 138 to eight daily.

Meanwhile, the US military reportedly dropped a GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator on Iran’s Parchin nuclear facility at Taleghan-2. Satellite imagery from Maxar and Planet Labs shows damage at the site. The 30,000-pound bomb was delivered by B-2 stealth bombers from Missouri and targeted a site linked to past IAEA findings of uranium particles and hydrodynamic tests for nuclear weapon components. Israel has previously documented Parchin’s role in the Amad Plan. Iranian state media has not addressed the reported strike or damage.

Multiple senior Trump officials—including Attorney General Pam Bondi, Stephen Miller, Marco Rubio, Kristi Noem, Pete Hegseth, Daniel Driscoll, and John Fellon—relocated to fortified military housing near Washington amid reported threats from cartels, critics, and overseas adversaries. The moves coincide with National Guard activations for civil disturbances and discussions of selective service registration for men aged 18-26. Some reports of the relocations have been described as unverified by major news outlets.

On the cyber front, the Iranian hacktivist group Handala claimed responsibility for a cyberattack that disrupted Stryker’s global systems, including laptops and servers in the US, Australia, India, and Ireland. Stryker described the incident as a severe global network disruption affecting its Windows environment and stated that business continuity measures remain in place. Stryker reported no detection of ransomware or malware in the incident. Employees reported wiped devices, defaced login pages with Handala logos, and stolen data estimated at 50 terabytes. Stryker supplies medical equipment to the US military under multi-year contracts worth over $675 million.

In a change of tune, China’s Foreign Ministry condemned Iran’s missile and drone attacks on Gulf states as unacceptable strikes on civilians and non-military targets, demanding an immediate ceasefire, halt to operations, and return to dialogue under international law. Previously, China had also criticized US and Israeli strikes on Iran as violations of international law.

Lastly, in a recent interview, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Esmail Baghaei rejected US claims of preemptive action, denied any intent to attack first, and called statements by President Trump and Secretary Rubio lies. Baghaei described US and Israeli strikes on Iranian schools, hospitals, and leadership as aggression, justified Gulf retaliatory strikes on US bases as self-defense under international law, and accused Israel of false flag operations.

Iran War – Economic Developments

Japan released 80 million barrels from national and private reserves starting March 16, breaking a 48-year precedent of coordinating solely through the International Energy Agency. Japan imports 90 percent of its oil from the Middle East, with 70 percent via Hormuz, and holds reserves for 254 days of consumption. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced nationwide gasoline subsidies to cap prices at ¥170 per liter.

Meanwhile, India reported securing safe passage for its tankers through Hormuz after a call between Ministers Jaishankar and Araghchi. The Liberian-flagged Shenlong, carrying Saudi crude, arrived in Mumbai. Iran denied granting passage to Indian-flagged vessels.

Fuel disruptions have prompted COVID-esque measures globally. Thailand and Vietnam urged remote work for public employees, air conditioning limits at 26°C, reduced overseas travel, and public transit use amid gasoline queues and reported 20 percent price surges. Pakistan mandated 50 percent office staffing, four-day weeks, and fuel cuts. The Philippines ordered conservation and flexible work. Bangladesh closed universities. Myanmar rationed fuel by license plates. Australia limited purchases to $20 at stations amid panic buying, with farmers facing shortages and rising grocery costs. Energy Minister Chris Bowen noted 32-36 days of reserves and urged against hoarding, as insurers warned that policies exclude hazardous fuel storage, potentially voiding coverage. Some governments characterized the measures as temporary precautions given adequate national stockpiles.

Lastly, the US has approximately two months of rare earth inventories left and relies on China for minerals essential to munitions like missile guidance and magnets. China processes 71 percent of US rare earth imports, including sole supplies of heavy variants like terbium. Pentagon munitions spending reached $5.6 billion in the war’s first two days, with restocking potentially delayed without Chinese access. The US is fast-tracking domestic rare earth production initiatives amid the conflict.

US Politics

Senator John Cornyn shifted from defending the filibuster to supporting rule changes for the SAVE Act, which requires photo ID and proof of citizenship for federal voting. Cornyn prioritized it over other measures per Trump’s directive. Polls show 71-84 percent American support, including majorities across parties. Democrats have labeled it suppression.

Relatedly, the DOJ sued 29 states plus DC for unredacted voter rolls with driver’s licenses or SSNs to check federal maintenance laws and is appealing dismissals in California, Oregon, and Michigan. The FBI raided Fulton County, Georgia, seizing ballots over 2020 issues, and subpoenaed Maricopa County, Arizona, data. Twelve states complied voluntarily; others cited privacy or timelines.

Privacy & Surveillance

In the US, the App Store Accountability Act requires app stores to verify user ages across brackets under 13, 13-15, 16-17, and adults, sharing data with developers. Critics, including 419 cybersecurity experts, warn it would create vast identity honeypots vulnerable to hacks, demand hard IDs like driver’s licenses, and violate the First Amendment per recent federal rulings blocking similar Texas laws. Critics state that parents prefer in-app controls over universal checks for mundane apps like weather or calculators. Supporters argue the act would strengthen parental consent requirements and age-appropriate content enforcement.

In the UK, the digital ID system promises streamlined services but acknowledges future police access to submitted photos for facial recognition under pending legislation. Officials deny mandatory use or direct policing ties, though right-to-work checks will require digital credentials. A beta demo faced technical issues.

Thermal Grizzly reported fraudulent metal shipments from Chinese suppliers after X-ray tests showed pure copper exteriors, but milling produced sparks and a magnet revealed steel cores coated in copper. Initial layers on pallets were genuine, passing weight checks, but underneath were fakes and empty space in aluminum orders. The €40,000 loss underscores fraud risks amid rising copper prices, with limited legal recourse against Chinese firms.
