We received a lot of great feedback from the content survey, and one idea that popped back into our field of view was for me to provide additional commentary on the wide range of articles that I run across when I do my daily scouting.
Here are the most interesting articles I’ve run across the past few days and why they caught my eye:
While acknowledging the Lake Shore Drive (LSD) standstill was “particularly troublesome,” officials said they would not apologize for keeping the road open as the storm intensified.
Without a series of accidents shortly after 7 p.m., the ordeal might not have happened, they said. “In 31 years with the city, I haven’t experienced anything like we did last night,” Orozco said. “We saw normal snow conditions, and the road was still passable. It was slow, but it was passable. Then we had those cascading events.”
Motorists, however, blamed the city for failing to close the drive and said there appeared to be no organized rescue plan.
“I feel like someone missed on the boat on not closing down Lake Shore Drive before it became a disaster,” said Craig Close, who was stuck on the road for about five hours as he tried to make it home to Lincoln Square.
Comments: I was struck by the comments by the citizen who blamed the city for their plight on LSD, which displayed exactly the wrong sort of attitude. If you drive into blizzard conditions, on a road that passes right next to one of the Great Lakes – a road called Lake Shore Drive for goodness sake! – and proceed to get stuck on said drive, then that is your responsibility, and yours alone. Yes, “someone missed the boat,” John Q. Public, and that person was you.
