US Politics

On election integrity, Mike Lindell announced private funding for a paper-ballot hand recount of Minnesota’s August 11 Republican gubernatorial primary, which his team describes as the largest in US history. The effort follows claims of election-night irregularities and a petition filed with the Minnesota Supreme Court regarding voting machines. It aligns with President Trump’s Executive Order 14248, which directs prosecution of election crimes, requires proof of citizenship for voter registration, links federal funding to state compliance, and mandates voter-roll maintenance using DHS databases. Critics have questioned the credibility of the effort and Lindell’s prior legal and financial issues.

On women’s sports, former Congressman Matt Gaetz’s law firm has been selected to represent Royce White with the WNBA. Gaetz has reportedly sent a letter to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert stating that the ex-NBA player, who identifies as a transgender woman, has declared for the 2027 WNBA Draft and meets eligibility rules under the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. The firm requested a written determination within ten business days. A similar effort was reported by former Utah Jazz player Enes Kanter Freedom. Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has criticized men competing in women’s sports. A recent poll indicated 70% opposition to biological males in the WNBA.

On immigration, the Trump administration continues to adapt to the changing legal landscape. Changes being implemented under Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller now include application freezes, a stricter public-charge rule, adjustments to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, restrictions on Diversity Visa winners, and limits on refugee admissions except for a small group of white South Africans. A proposed rule would increase H-1B prevailing wages. The State Department paused immigrant visa issuance for nationals of about 80 countries. The National Foundation for American Policy projects a 33%–50% reduction in legal immigration by the end of the term, which it estimates would open 19 million worker-years for Americans by 2028. The policies have faced lawsuits and criticism for their broad effects on immigrant families and workers.

On US-Israel integration, a Data for Progress poll of 1,217 likely voters, conducted August 3–7 for Demand Progress and the Institute for Middle East Understanding Policy Project, found 61% oppose a provision in the 2027 NDAA that would expand integration of Israeli weapons companies into the Pentagon. Opposition reached 78% among Democrats and 73% among independents. Section 219 would establish a US–Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative on AI, missile defense, and counter-drone systems. An amendment by Reps. Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna to remove the section did not pass. Fifty-one percent of respondents said Israel benefits more from the relationship, compared with 12% who said the US does.

Geopolitics

In Ukraine, former defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov released a video calling for a legal pathway to wartime elections, stating that democracy should not be held hostage by Russia. Former Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba supported the call, noting that the 2019 political model is exhausted. This marks the first public demand for elections from a senior Zelensky ally since the invasion, and Fedorov’s firing in July prompted protests. Opponents argue elections during wartime risk Russian interference and societal disunity.

Meanwhile, President Trump announced US withdrawal from NATO after European allies declined to support the ongoing conflict with Iran that began with a joint US-Israeli strike on February 28. Germany, France, the UK, Italy, and Spain did not provide base access or naval assets. Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressed disappointment, and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called for Europe to pursue greater strategic autonomy. That said, some reports clarify that no formal withdrawal has occurred and the United States remains a full NATO member.

Privacy & Surveillance

In the U.S., an Ohio grand jury declined to indict Cody Morelock on charges of destroying a Flock Safety license-plate camera. The decision follows growing public criticism of the company’s plate-reader network.

In France, its Constitutional Council struck down a law that would have barred anyone under 15 from opening social media accounts starting September 1 and required platforms to close existing accounts within four months. The Council ruled the measure infringed on freedom of expression and lacked privacy safeguards. Similar proposals remain under consideration in the UK, Spain, Greece, Denmark, Brazil, Canada, and Norway.

Education

The Liberty Justice Center filed a federal lawsuit against Portland Public Schools on behalf of parent Allison Roberts, alleging retaliation after she objected to gender-identity content at Meriwether Lewis Elementary. The suit challenges the district’s harassment policy and its nondisclosure policy on such lessons.

Artificial Intelligence

The Cherokee Nation banned hyperscale data center development on its reservation without proper consultation. A survey of 1,593 citizens found 64% opposed such projects. Chief Chuck Hoskin cited threats to resources and cultural practices while noting the nation’s need for reliable computing services.

Canadian Politics

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith confirmed that if Option 2 prevails in the October 19 vote, the province will hold a binding independence referendum in spring 2027. Skeptics have described the independence push as potentially lacking majority support for full separation.

Health

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reported that 26,000 farmers have applied to transition to regenerative agriculture, the largest response the USDA has recorded. The agency has allocated $700 million to support the shift. Proponents state that regenerative practices rebuild soil, improve water retention, increase nutrient density, reduce chemical inputs, and expand access to markets with chemical restrictions. Critics contend the approach risks food security by romanticizing past practices.
