We hope you enjoy this special edition of the Daily Digest and take some time to reflect upon the founding principles of America, born in the Age of Enlightenment and expressed through the Declaration of Independence 250 years ago today.
Freedom at 250
Freedom House’s 2026 report recorded a 20th consecutive year of global freedom decline, with more than 50 countries showing reduced scores. The United States received a score of 81, its lowest in the index, tied with South Africa.
The Rutherford Institute’s John Whitehead described the 250th anniversary as overlapping with the 25th anniversary of post-9/11 policies. He listed measures including the PATRIOT Act, fusion centers, facial recognition, license plate readers, emergency declarations, militarized policing, National Guard deployments, warrantless tracking, expanded classifications of extremism, and qualified immunity. He stated that presidents of both parties contributed to these developments and that the current administration has applied them in ways that test habeas corpus, due process, and separation of powers.
Writing for the Ron Paul Institute, Judge Andrew Napolitano referenced Rev. Mather Byles’s 1775 question on whether it is better to be ruled by one tyrant 3,000 miles away or 3,000 tyrants one mile away. He stated that the 17th Amendment ended state representation in the Senate, that Congress has used borrowed funds to influence state legislation beyond enumerated powers, and that states imposed COVID lockdowns. He noted the 3-million federal civilian workforce and concluded that a democratic majority now takes liberty and property without restraint.
The question becomes, what might revolution look like? In a public address, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the United States as an arena of supremacy controlled by oligarchs, monopolies, and insurers, and stated that those obstructing ICE are the truest patriots. Reports indicate he recently received a $4 billion state allocation and is aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America. Mamdani’s office has presented the address as a hopeful vision of striving toward perfection through inclusion.
Geopolitics on the Fourth
Iranian authorities planned a multi-day state funeral for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, timed to coincide with the Fourth of July, and the US agreed to pause hostilities for the event. Delegations from about 30 countries were expected, although the US and other Western countries were not invited, and Qatar and Pakistan have paused certain diplomatic talks. During ceremonies, crowds chanted slogans including calls for revenge. Khamenei’s son and reported successor has not appeared publicly since February.
Back in America, a planned aviation event on the National Mall will include demonstration teams from the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, and several fighter and transport aircraft. A social media post from Northrop Grumman has prompted speculation about a possible B-21 Raider appearance, suggesting the 250th celebrations would be a good excuse to showcase American power.
Controversial Celebrations
Fourth of July celebrations across the country were reportedly marred by bureaucracy, complaints, and crackdowns on fireworks. In Brockton, Massachusetts, the mayor canceled a planned fireworks display and substituted a shorter event, citing difficulty obtaining licensed operators under state law, and imposed a 10 p.m. curfew. In Yacolt, Washington, a complaint has been filed against red-white-and-blue road markings. In Alexandria, Virginia, the city encouraged residents to report neighbors using fireworks by calling 311.
Meanwhile, Buffalo, Boston, and Minneapolis raised the Somali flag at city halls heading into the Fourth, sparking backlash from the public.
At the national level, separate reports allege that of $150 million appropriated by Congress for 250th events, $25 million reached the bipartisan commission while roughly $80 million went to an LLC connected to a National Park Service charity. Additional claims involve a $10 million grant for materials produced with PragerU and data collection by a firm registered as a foreign agent. Critics suggest that the 250th celebrations “look like one big money-laundering scheme,” whereas others say the rerouted funds supported events focused on traditional patriotic themes.
Privacy & Surveillance
Long Beach, California, will use drones to identify locations of illegal fireworks and gather evidence for enforcement. Civil liberties groups have stated that the practice could set a precedent for expanded aerial monitoring. The city has cited public safety, fire risks, and reduced emergency calls as reasons for the drone use, noting it expands existing aerial tools rather than introducing new surveillance.
We the People
Highlighting the nation’s political polarization, a CNN poll showed partisan differences in plans for the Fourth of July, with a plurality of Democrats indicating they would mark the day only with family gatherings and fewer than 30 percent saying they are proud to be American. Contrasting this, 90 percent of Republicans indicated very high pride, with a much stronger emphasis on traditional patriotic celebrations.
However, in a rare show of majority opinion, an AEI survey found that nearly 80 percent of respondents believe Americans take their freedoms for granted, three-quarters support requiring high school study of the Declaration of Independence, and 65 percent favor public discussion of both national successes and failures. Sixty percent of boomers expressed strong respect for the Founders compared with 30 percent of Gen Z. Similarly, 89 percent of boomers said they are proud to be American compared with two-thirds of Gen Z.
On that note, does it all start with education? A segment on Jesse Watters’ program recorded incorrect answers from young respondents about basic facts of American independence, including why the US celebrates the Fourth of July, how old the country is, who the nation declared independence from, and the name of the general who led American forces to victory. Senator Rand Paul stated that schools are failing to teach the history of the country’s founding. Critics have described the segment as an obnoxious approach to interviewing young people.

Seventy-Two Killed Resisting Gun Confiscation In Massachusetts.
A National Guard task-force detailed to confiscate a cache of recently banned assault-style weapons, was ambushed by elements of an anti-Government, para-military extremist faction.
Military & law enforcement sources estimate that 72 were killed and more than 200 injured before government forces were compelled to withdraw.
Speaking after the clash, Massachusetts Governor Thomas Gage declared that the extremist faction, which was made up of local citizens, has links to the radical right-wing tax protest movement.
Gage blamed the extremists for recent incidents of vandalism directed against internal revenue offices. The governor, who described the group’s organizers as “treasonous criminals,” issued an executive order authorizing the summary arrest of any individual who has interfered with the government’s efforts to secure law and order.
The military raid on the extremist arsenal followed wide-spread refusal by the local citizenry to turn over recently outlawed assault-style weapons.
Gage issued a ban on military-style assault weapons and ammunition earlier in the week. This decision followed a meeting in early this month between government and military leaders at which the governor authorized the forcible confiscation of illegal arms.
One government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, pointed out that “none of these people would have been killed had the extremists obeyed the law and turned over their weapons voluntarily.”
Government troops initially succeeded in confiscating a large supply of outlawed weapons and ammunition.
However, troops attempting to seize arms and ammunition in Lexington met with resistance from heavily-armed extremists who had been tipped off regarding the government’s plans.
During a tense standoff in the Lexington town park, National Guard Colonel Francis Smith, commander of the government operation, ordered the armed group to surrender and return to their homes. The impasse was broken by a single shot, which was reportedly fired by one of the right-wing extremists. Eight civilians were killed in the ensuing exchange.
Ironically, the local citizenry blamed the government forces rather than the extremists for the civilian deaths. Before order could be restored, armed citizens from surrounding areas had descended upon the National Guard units. Colonel Smith, finding his forces over matched by the armed mob, ordered a retreat.
Governor Gage has called upon citizens to support the state/national joint task force in its effort to restore law and order. The governor also demanded the surrender of those responsible for planning and leading the attack against the government troops.
Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, and John Hancock, who have been identified as “ringleaders” of the extremist faction, remain at large.
