Health

Radical Numerics said it treated a patient with a serious bacterial infection using bacteriophages designed by its AI Omnii-1 model, which redesigned a virus to attack the patient’s strain. The company said lab tests cleared the antibiotic-resistant sample but did not report the clinical outcome. The claim is not peer-reviewed. Stanford researchers earlier reported 16 AI-designed viruses killed E. coli in lab tests. The case was a single-patient compassionate-use administration that commentators said cannot establish treatment efficacy.

Separately, University of Minnesota scientists built SpudCells from membranes, engineered DNA, ribosomes, and enzymes. Researchers said the 90,000-base-pair genome supports protein production and growth by absorbing nutrient bubbles. Cells divided across five generations with mechanical help. An advantageous variant rose from 10% to 38% of the population. Lab conditions are still required.

In nutritional news, a two-year Norwegian trial of 193 adults with obesity found that a very low-carb diet with nearly a third of energy from saturated fat did not raise apoB compared with two higher-carb diets. LDL rose 5-10%, mainly as larger particles. Triglycerides fell 20-35%, and HDL rose 5-18%. Twelve-month CT scans showed no difference in coronary calcium. Limitations reportedly included substantial participant dropout and the absence of hard endpoints such as cardiovascular events.

US Politics

A Virginia owner received a rights-restoration certificate for Biscuit, a dog dead for five years, which, under the governor’s signature, purported to restore voting and jury rights as part of its program to restore voting rights to felons. Del. Tom Garrett called for an investigation. A Spanberger spokesman said the office did not restore a dog’s rights. The governor has announced more than 100,000 restorations since January, and possible data mixing in government databases was offered as an explanation for the certificate. Relatedly, a Tuesday ballot measure would make felon restorations automatic.

Speaking of election news, America’s two largest teachers’ unions spent more than $930 million on politics, lobbying, and advocacy from fiscal 2016 to 2025. The NEA spent at least $547 million, including $458.9 million in reported political activity and lobbying, and directed $116.9 million to its super PAC. The AFT reported $383.2 million, including $45.7 million to four national partisan committees.

In fraud news, the Justice Department announced the first arrests in Operation Ghostbusters over what officials described as a ghost-student scheme using stolen identities for FAFSA aid since at least 2021. Officials estimate at least $200 million diverted and have flagged about 830,840 potentially fake FSA IDs. Five suspects were arrested, including two Kenyan nationals in the United States since at least 2024. Authorities said funds often went to Kenya through money mules and crypto.

Lastly, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, former husband of Rep. Ilhan Omar, identified as a gay man in an August paper amid a Justice Department probe of their 2009 marriage. Omar said not to her knowledge when asked if she married her brother and called the claim insane. Former Frey adviser Joe Radinovich wrote that the allegation is almost certainly true. DHS raided her D.C. home Oct. 12. A filing listed her as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi.

Artificial Intelligence

Banks report customers sharing login credentials with AI agents that manage accounts, sometimes contacting call centers without extra approval. Torsten Slok of Apollo wrote that agents could shift cash from 0.1% checking accounts into 3.3%-5.0% accounts, reducing cheap deposits used for lending. Jamie Dimon said agents may not act properly. David Sacks said authorized agents are not cyberattacks. Several banks have begun blocking third-party AI agents.

Speaking of becoming vulnerable to AI, Gothenburg researchers found 413 reported vulnerabilities in connected cars in the U.S. National Vulnerabilities Database from January 2022 to September 2023. Vulnerabilities exposed could let hackers (or AI) seize control of data, personal information, and even the brakes.

In other news, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a law banning AI chatbot features for minors that present the bot as a human who is alive or feels emotions, plus flattery, suicide or drug endorsement, and isolation from adults. The attorney general may sue and seek data destruction. The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2027. Tech: NYC said it could limit tutoring and raise First Amendment issues. Child safety advocates welcomed the law, while critics believe it will lead to enforcement of government IDs to police Internet activity.

European Politics

Paris protests turned violent for a third weekend, drawing about 70,000 in the capital and more than 300,000 nationwide, with over 500 arrests. Rioters threw Molotovs at police, and footage showed an officer on fire. Police called the intensity extraordinary. Marseille saw break-ins of homes. Lyon protesters burned American and Israeli flags.

At the same time in Germany, Halloween footage in Frankfurt showed store looting and a Molotov thrown at police, livestreamed on TikTok. Some reports described young first- and second-generation migrants attacking stores. Officials attributed the violence to left-wing extremists infiltrating initially peaceful youth protests.

Separately, Germany recorded 11,334 suicides in 2025, the most since 1998 and up 9.3% from 10,372. Men were 69.2% of the deaths. Nearly half were 65 or older. Assisted suicides exceeded 1,200. A youth survey found 23% of respondents in debt and 29% needing psychological support, both records in the study.

Economy

Fitch revised France’s outlook to negative, citing weaker growth, higher borrowing costs, a wider deficit, and political fragmentation. Debt is forecast at 124% of GDP in 2028, from 115.7% in 2025. Fitch said the fiscal adjustment needed to stabilize debt rose to about 3.5% of GDP. The 10-year yield was around 4.92%, and the bund spread briefly topped 175 basis points.

Meanwhile, Steve Eisman (of The Big Short) said Anthropic’s lack of third-quarter figures in an Oct. 26 prospectus before a possible $2 trillion IPO was “only very intentional.” He cited growth slowing from 144% in Q2 to 45% in Q3 and revenue per compute dollar falling from $2.08 to $1.70. The filing lists large Amazon, Google, and Broadcom-related commitments. He said he would not join the IPO. Filings are often amended.

Geopolitics

Qatari reports said the U.S. and Iran agreed to direct talks in Doha, with preliminary measures on the nuclear program, Strait of Hormuz traffic, and financial incentives, and China and Russia as possible guarantors. According to the reports, draft points included moving or lowering highly enriched uranium, reopening the strait within seven days of an initial deal, and matching steps with U.S. sanctions relief. Iran’s Supreme Leader ordered an immediate response to any threat without geographical limits. Iranian officials described U.S. outreach as a positive step, though no direct meetings were scheduled.
