Iran War
A senior Iranian official said Tehran has been invited to join the Mecca Defence Agreement, the trilateral pact signed on August 7, 2026, by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. Mehdi Rahimi, head of the Iranian Parliament’s news agency, told Al-Mayadeen the matter is under consideration and described the regional shift as a victory for Iran. The pact was signed after Saudi Arabia came under Iranian drone and missile fire during the 2026 war. Riyadh, Ankara, and Islamabad have not confirmed the invitation, and analysts noted that Saudi-Iranian rivalry and Iran-Pakistan tensions over cross-border militancy could complicate accession.
Meanwhile, Iranian hackers reportedly shut down a British power plant for four days in an unprecedented cyber attack, according to The Telegraph. The incident is believed to be the first successful closure of such a UK facility by regime-affiliated hackers and the most successful of its kind. Officials declined to name the plant for security reasons but indicated it was relatively small, with no impact on the wider power supply. The attack coincided with similar incidents against US water infrastructure and may have aimed to demonstrate access to sensitive systems.

Attorneys for Dr. Anthony Fauci have established a legal defense fund, despite Fauci and his wife holding a net worth reported at roughly $15 million in 2023. Lawyer David Schertler described an unprecedented legal barrage against the former NIAID director. The trust is administered by an independent corporate trustee, with remaining funds to go to charity. A Senate committee voted to hold him in contempt after he refused to answer questions in July, and a criminal referral was sent to the DOJ. Fauci holds a pardon covering January 1, 2014, through January 19, 2025. Sen. Rand Paul argued prosecution remains possible for alleged false statements after that date. Additionally, Florida AG James Uthmeier has also subpoenaed Fauci. The fund’s creation follows the guilty admission of Dr. David Morens, a former Fauci adviser, to defrauding the government by destroying FOIA-covered records.

Turkey has issued an international arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and official Afek Moskovitch, and has asked Interpol to issue red notices. Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said the warrants, issued July 14 on genocide charges, stem from Israel’s mid-May interception of a Gaza aid flotilla. The case before Istanbul’s 11th High Criminal Court names 35 defendants and includes charges of crimes against humanity, torture, hijacking, and aggravated robbery. This marks Turkey’s second such warrant against Netanyahu. Netanyahu’s office has rejected the accusations and described Turkish President Erdogan as an antisemitic dictator.
Relatedly, Israel struck Syria’s Abu al-Duhur airbase on Tuesday, damaging the facility. Netanyahu’s office claimed Damascus was preparing to allow Turkish troop deployment, which Syria and Turkey both denied. Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Erdogan against dragging Turkey into dangerous adventures in Syria. The Middle East Eye reported Ankara views the strike as a challenge to its credibility, and that Israel did not use its military hotline with Turkey before the strike. US envoy Tom Barrack called the attack an unnecessary escalation.
In other news, South Korea has launched its first container ship trial through Russia’s Northern Sea Route. The PanStar Acro departed Busan for Felixstowe, Rotterdam, and Gdansk. The 13,000 km Arctic passage is roughly 35% shorter than the Suez route. Western diplomats raised concerns about sanctions exposure from payments for Russian navigation services overseen by Rosatom, but Seoul says those risks have been resolved. Rosatom CEO Aleksey Likhachev linked rising NSR demand to instability in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea.

A Midwestern Doctor argued that medicine’s 50-year campaign against salt, launched by a 1977 Senate dietary guidelines committee, rests on evidence that does not support claims salt meaningfully raises blood pressure. The author cited reviews finding drastic salt reduction produces less than a 1% blood pressure change on average. Salt restriction activates the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, raising adrenaline, cholesterol, and triglycerides. Studies across 181 countries and a 100,000-person cohort show a U-shaped mortality curve, with lowest risk at 3-5 grams of sodium daily. A 2026 meta-analysis found sodium restriction in heart failure patients increased all-cause mortality by 50%. The author recommends natural, unrefined salts balanced with potassium.

Illegal immigration into Spain is back in the news. Dozens of military-age men leapt from a boat at Cala del Barco near La Manga Club in Cartagena and ran past beachgoers. Authorities counted 62 aboard, mostly presumed Algerian nationals, including 45 adult men. Cartagena mayor Noelia Arroyo condemned the incident. Police and Red Cross arrived after the vessel had left. The landing follows the mass crossing of over 70,000 into Ceuta from Morocco. Hospitals in Ceuta report rising cases of scabies, measles, impetigo, ringworm, tuberculosis, and gastroenteritis. Police have warned of underage girls being taken into surrounding mountains for gang rapes, and Civil Guard figures confirm multiple sexual assaults since July.

Jefferson Parish, Louisiana deputy Nathan Rome was fired after admitting he used the department’s Flock camera system more than 3,200 times over several years to track his former fiancée’s vehicle. The misuse was discovered after a Fox 8 news station contacted the department. Rome cooperated and waived his rights. Sheriff Joseph Lopinto confirmed the former fiancée was aware of the surveillance and did not consider herself a victim. The department has not ruled out a criminal referral and will audit the Flock system for further abuse.
