Health
President Trump is preparing to launch TrumpRx, a website intended to enable Americans to buy discounted drugs for cash by bypassing intermediaries. Industry groups like PhRMA have raised concerns about potential disruptions to the supply chain and risks of counterfeit drugs entering the market.
Additionally, Trump has approved Pfizer’s expansion of its mRNA platform, a decision that has drawn criticism from some groups, raising questions about potential influence, according to public statements from critics. Health experts have reportedly defended the move, highlighting the rigorous testing of mRNA technology and its potential for broader medical advancements.
US Politics
The deadline for preventing a government shutdown has come and gone. Speaker Mike Johnson has stated that Democrats rejected a continuing resolution (CR) without additional policy provisions, instead supporting a version that included funding for undocumented immigrants, reductions to rural hospital budgets, and $500 million for public broadcasting. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had countered on social media, emphasizing Democrats’ commitment to responsible governance and bipartisan cooperation to avoid a shutdown, denying claims of yielding to partisan pressure. Now that no resolution could be passed, the Trump Administration will reportedly have authority to direct expense reductions however they see fit.
Certain NGOs, reportedly supported by funding from the Arabella Advisors network, had reportedly been urging Democratic senators to oppose the funding bills, according to sources familiar with the mobilization efforts. These groups are said to be encouraging Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to resist President Trump’s proposals, with some activists claiming Democrats have previously conceded to Republican priorities.
Separately, the Department of Justice has filed a civil lawsuit against anti-Israeli protesters under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, following a protest at a New Jersey synagogue event related to West Bank settlements. The case has prompted discussion about the law’s applicability to religious events. Critics, including some legal commentators, have questioned the DOJ’s selective enforcement of the Act, suggesting it may target specific political groups over others.
Meanwhile, Pete Hegseth, in a War Department address to 800 senior military officials, announced a focus on warfighting and lethality, issuing directives to emphasize combat standards and merit-based promotions. However, concerns have been raised by groups like the ACLU, who argue that eliminating diversity initiatives could harm inclusivity in the military.
Energy
Imperial Oil Ltd. announced plans to reduce its workforce by 20%—approximately 900 jobs—by 2027, primarily in Calgary, while shifting key operations to Edmonton’s Strathcona Refinery. Exxon also disclosed it will cut 2,000 jobs globally, about 3-4% of its staff, as part of a restructuring effort to consolidate operations into regional hubs.
On production, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a record U.S. oil output of 21.218 million barrels per day in July, following a significant upward revision that also indicated stronger demand than previously estimated. Some analysts, however, remain skeptical about the sustainability of such high production levels due to potential environmental and regulatory challenges.
Geopolitics
President Trump stated that U.S. submarines have been deployed off Russia’s coast in response to nuclear rhetoric, emphasizing the stealth capabilities of U.S. technology as part of a deterrence strategy. The Kremlin has responded, calling such actions provocative and warning of potential unintended consequences.
Meanwhile, Russia plans to sell natural gas to China at prices reportedly at least 27% lower than those for Europe and Turkey over the next three years, reportedly signaling the price Russia is willing to pay to pivot away from dependence on the West. China’s Ministry of Commerce has described these deals as based on “reasonable market prices,” without confirming specific discounts.
In the Middle East, Trump introduced a 20-point plan to resolve the Gaza conflict, which has the support of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Russia, and several Arab states. The plan includes provisions for Hamas to release hostages and disarm, alongside a phased security transition and reconstruction efforts. Hamas officials, however, have rejected the plan, stating it does not represent Palestinian interests and lacks provisions for a Palestinian state.
Trump also approved a $6 billion arms deal to Israel, including helicopters and assault vehicles, amid ongoing hostage negotiations with Hamas. However, Spain has prohibited U.S. military planes and ships from using its bases in Rota and Morón to transport arms to Israel, citing national sovereignty and reflecting broader European concerns over Israel’s actions in Gaza, according to Spanish officials. The U.S. Embassy in Spain has expressed concern, noting the decision could impact long-standing military cooperation between the two nations.
Economy
Economic data presents a varied outlook. Vail Resorts reported a 3% decline in North American season-pass sales units ahead of the ski season, despite a 1% revenue increase, with projected net income expected to fall below last year’s figures. However, the company noted positive trends in other revenue streams like lodging and dining, suggesting a more nuanced financial picture. On a wider scale, the August JOLTS report indicated a labor market facing challenges, showing more unemployed individuals than job openings for the first time since 2021, along with declining hiring and quits rates. Some analysts, however, point out that job openings remain relatively high compared to pre-pandemic levels, suggesting the market is adjusting rather than collapsing.
