Geopolitics
As Russia’s military operation in Ukraine enters its fifth year, a report by Andrew Koybko highlights five geostrategic challenges for Russia. These include potential NATO influence expansion along Russia’s southern periphery via a corridor through Armenia’s Syunik Province to Central Asia, involving Turkey and Azerbaijan, potentially influencing Kazakhstan. The US reportedly supports Poland’s military growth and role in containing Russia post-conflict. The EU is militarizing with Germany’s nearly $100 billion in defense projects and an €800 billion ReArm Europe Plan, plus a military Schengen for troop movements now including Baltic States. India is undergoing a US-friendly recalibration after a trade deal, possibly reducing Russian oil and arms imports. Poland has declared nuclear ambitions, and Turkey may follow, amid the New START lapse.
Speaking of nukes, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service claimed the UK and France plan a covert transfer of nuclear components or a French TN 75 warhead to Ukraine, or assistance for a dirty bomb, while preparing an information campaign to claim domestic development. Ukraine, the UK, and France dismissed the allegations as baseless propaganda lacking evidence. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, stated Russia would use non-strategic nuclear weapons against threatening targets in Ukraine or supplier nations if NATO provides such arms. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the alleged plans dangerous to non-proliferation. The Russian State Duma plans a resolution urging UK and French investigations. Germany reportedly refused participation.
Meanwhile, the US abstained on a UN General Assembly resolution for lasting peace in Ukraine, which passed 107-12 with 51 abstentions. Ukraine proposed the measure, co-sponsored by 46 nations, calling for an immediate ceasefire, prisoner exchanges, and territorial restoration. Ukrainian outlets criticized the US abstention amid emphasis on territorial integrity. US Ambassador Tammy Bruce noted the language could distract from negotiations, including diplomatic avenues for durable peace. Israel voted in favor, breaking with the US alongside China.
Turning to the Middle East, Iran reportedly nears a deal for Chinese CM-302 supersonic anti-ship missiles with a 290-kilometer range, designed to evade defenses, amid US carrier deployments in the Gulf ahead of Geneva talks. The Financial Times reported a December agreement for Russia to supply Iran 500 Verba launchers and 2,500 9M336 missiles worth €500 million to rebuild air defenses damaged in June airstrikes. The CIA released a Farsi video urging Iranians to contact the agency anonymously via Tor or VPN during protests, stressing it can hear their voice and wants to help, as US bombers operate near Tehran. US defense analysts maintain that layered defenses can counter such missile threats.
Additionally, eleven F-22 Raptors deployed to Israel’s Ovda Airbase from RAF Lakenheath, supported by tankers, marking the first combat-oriented basing there. The stealth fighters specialize in suppressing enemy air defenses, neutralizing radars and missile systems like Iran’s S-300 and S-400 protecting nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. This positions them to clear paths for B-2 bombers with GBU-57 bunker busters, amid two US carrier strike groups, munitions airlifts, tankers, AWACS, and evacuations. US officials described the move as a force posture adjustment.
Lastly, Puerto Vallarta has reportedly returned to normal operations following the recent cartel violence. Burning cars and military presence disrupted the area for six to eight hours, but roads, taxis, Ubers, and the airport now function. Flights resumed after a 24-to-48-hour period of caution.
Artificial Intelligence
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly issued Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei an ultimatum until Friday to grant the Pentagon unfettered access to Claude, used in classified systems including the Maduro raid via Palantir. Options include cutting ties, declaring Anthropic a supply chain risk, or invoking the Defense Production Act to compel adaptations without safeguards on surveillance or autonomous weapons. Hegseth met with top officials, praising Claude but rejecting company terms. Anthropic offered policy adaptations for national security but maintained red lines. The Pentagon is accelerating deals with xAI’s Grok, OpenAI, and Google Gemini for classified use.
Relatedly, Elon Musk’s xAI signed a deal allowing Grok to operate in top-secret Pentagon systems for intelligence analysis, weapons development, and battlefield tasks, following Anthropic’s restrictions. Critics expressed concerns over dystopian risks from AI deployment in military systems.
Energy
The AI boom is driving surging power demands from data centers requiring 300 to 500 megawatts each. Microsoft secured involvement in restarting Three Mile Island Unit 1, now Crane Clean Energy Center, with a $1 billion DOE loan targeting 2027 operation, and a power purchase agreement with Helion Energy for fusion. Amazon acquired the Cumulus Data Center campus near Susquehanna nuclear plant for behind-the-meter access and partners on small modular reactors with Energy Northwest and X-energy for nearly a gigawatt. Nuclear offers over 90 percent capacity factors, continuous output, low emissions, and decades-long lifespans suited to AI’s baseload needs. Critics cite safety risks, cost overruns, delays, and cheaper renewable alternatives like solar-plus-storage.
US Politics
During his State of the Union address, President Trump invited legislators to stand in support of the principle that the first duty of American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens. Democrats remained seated.
The CIA republished declassified Project Artichoke files from 1951-1956, predecessor to MKUltra, detailing plans for covert drugs in food, water, Coca-Cola, beer, cigarettes, vaccinations, and injections to induce agitating or depressing effects for mind control and behavior modification. Methods included hypnosis, gases, and oxygen deprivation tested on prisoners, soldiers, and psychiatric patients without consent. Fact-checks note the files were declassified in 1983 and described hypothetical rather than implemented methods.
Privacy & Surveillance
Mark Zuckerberg testified for more than five hours in Los Angeles Superior Court on claims that Meta designed Instagram to addict children and contribute to mental health issues including anxiety and body dysmorphia. The plaintiff, identified as KGM and now 20, alleged harm from using the platform starting at age 9. Internal documents reportedly showed an estimated 4 million users under 13 on Instagram in 2015 and highlighted enforcement challenges for age restrictions. Zuckerberg proposed that Apple and Google implement age verification at the operating system level for all apps, calling it cleaner than app-by-app checks. He said the approach would require identity checks for smartphone users across platforms and devices, although critics worry that such a requirement could end anonymous Internet access for everybody. Zuckerberg denied claims that Instagram causes addiction or direct teen mental health harm, stating no scientific evidence supports them. Related legislation includes:
- California’s SB 976, mandating age verification by 2027
- The federal Kids Online Safety Act, directing device-level systems
- New York’s SAFE For Kids Act, requiring verification or biometric analysis for algorithmic feeds.
