Ready or not, if you live along the US east coast, Mother Nature has just announced a pop quiz. Subject: personal and community resiliency.
By all accounts, Hurricane Irene is a big storm. The latest projections have it making landfall at North Carolina tomorrow around mid-day. From there it's expected to march northward up the east coast, impacting a long stretch of the country inhabited by 65 million – 1 in 5 of the people in the country. Mandatory evacuations in several states have already been announced, including the lower-lying boroughs of Manhattan.
Our thoughts are with our with our readers, staff, and family living in Irene's path. We hope you're all able to take appropriate steps to ensure your safety as the storm passes over (and if you haven't, we certainly recommend doing so before Irene arrives).
And we're setting up this thread for folks to use – for sharing preparation guidance, reporting developments, asking advice, and providing emotional support – in advance of and during the storm.

With the launch of the new book, Chris has been busy delivering the Three E message to a media slowly awakening to the severity of our predicament. Recent world developments (spiking silver/gold/oil/food prices, a plummeting US dollar, renewed PIIGS debt concerns, MENA unrest, and Japan’s woes, to name just a few) are sobering signals that we are far into the timeline that the Crash Course has predicted.
I thought I’d compile some of Chris’ more recent and notable media appearances for those who may not have seen them yet.

Dan Ariely needs lab rats.
Our new friend, the renowned behavioral economics researcher, is conducting an experiment to better understand people’s perceptions around wealth inequality. A timely subject, as the wealth gap between rich and poor in many developed countries is now reaching all-time highs.
Following Chris’ recent interview with him, Dan has put together a survey for the CM.com audience to fill out on this topic. Perhaps we’ll become one of the colorful studies Dan is famous for citing in his talks!
If you’re game for it, take 10 minutes to fill out Dan’s survey. And remember, this is for posterity, so please be honest. (Can anyone cite that film reference?)
Here’s a bit more background in Dan’s own words:

After hearing reports of depleting inventories of pre-packaged, ready-to-purchase stored food, CM.com did a little investigating. It turns out there's truth behind the rumor.
Yesterday, Zero Hedge observed:
It appears that Mountain House, which is one of the better purveyors of freeze dried food and holds over 30 servings and last for 20 years because they are packed with nitrogen rather than oxygen, is now sold out of all #10 cans. And for those who go to NitroPak, which sells these products, they have the following message:
***CURRENT INVENTORY UPDATE***
There is currently EXTREMELY high demand for all of our Mountain House foods nationwide due to current economic uncertainty and inflation fears. With this increase in demand, our food order processing times have increased also. As Mountain House’s leading distributor, we are receiving huge shipments weekly to fill our customer orders. We are shipping as quickly as we can. Your charge card will not be charged-up until we are ready to process your order. Thank you for your understanding and patience! Harry R Weyandt President
Nitro-Pak is one of the distributors we often recommend to our readers, so we started there. Sure enough, the above inventory update is prominently posted.
I then placed a call to The Ready Store, whose products we link to from the Storing Food section of our 'What Should I Do?' guide. They also include a lot of Mountain House products in their food packages. They, too, are seeing high demand, which is affecting their promised shipping times.
