It turns out that corporations are like people. When they feel threatened, they'll do anything to get back at their perceived nemeses. The instinct to survive can bring out the worst in people – and, it seems, corporations, too.
Behind the scenes, Adam and I discuss the possibility that our small site may also be targeted by various organizations that understand that information is power and wish to control the flow of that information through a variety of tactics. I've been around the Internet long enough to spot the more ham-handed attempts at such control, but the tactics and strategies being deployed in this battle are becoming ever more sophisticated.
I don't think we're being actively targeted yet, although obviously I can't be entirely certain. But it's something to be mindful of.
It all comes down to trust, and we are all now familiar enough with the idea that pictures can be photoshopped and that videos can be doctored via CGI (computer inserted graphics) such that even experts can be fooled.
So we don't trust those as much anymore. We wonder right up front if any amazing images or videos we came across have been faked. Skepticism is our starting point.
And these days, we're finding that skepticism has to run even deeper, into the very substance of what we are being told. Articles are slanted, and sins of both omission and commission are committed daily. Anything we're told needs to be questioned, and we have to keep our minds open for what is missing from the reporting, too.
