Geopolitics

In a Sunday post, Tucker Carlson said the Trump administration may be within days of a nuclear first strike on Iran at Pickax Mountain, where Israeli intelligence claims enrichment has restarted too deep for conventional weapons. Carlson said Benjamin Netanyahu presses Trump daily and that Pete Hegseth and Brad Cooper oppose a negotiated settlement, while Marco Rubio and John Ratcliffe follow Netanyahu’s lead. He said Trump may decide by November 7 and is listening to JD Vance and Steve Witkoff. Carlson warned of Gulf fallout and a nuclear-use precedent. Trump told Newsmax in October that he would not use nuclear weapons against Iran, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said over the weekend that the president prefers to resolve the conflict peacefully and has not made a decision.

Conspiracy Theory

Sen. Chris Murphy was hospitalized after a stroke on Saturday, days after he stated he had seen a new plan for an attack on Iran and called it catastrophic (as reported in the October 31 Daily Digest). His chief of staff said he is awake and alert and that doctors are optimistic about a full recovery.

Energy

Ukrainian drones struck Russia’s Kstovo oil refinery overnight into Sunday, the third Russian refinery hit in three days after Kyiv ended a pause on energy-site attacks. The Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez plant, Russia’s fourth-largest refinery and second-largest gasoline producer, and an adjacent power plant caught fire. A Friday Samara-region strike had ended a two-week pause that followed Trump administration pressure. Jared Kushner had reportedly asked Kyiv for a 30-day halt. President Zelensky later said he agreed to a brief pause.

US Politics

More than 51.3 million Americans had voted early by Saturday, exceeding the 45.9 million record from 2022, according to University of Florida Election Lab figures. In 27 states tracking party registration, Democrats accounted for 43.1 percent of early ballots and Republicans 31.8 percent. Director Michael McDonald said early voters tend to lean Democratic and that the electorate typically shifts Republican on Election Day. Republicans recorded stronger early numbers in Florida, Texas, and Michigan.

Speaking of the election, NPR reported that ChatGPT cited websites resembling local news outlets that promote Democrats in competitive House races. VisionHeight identified a 37-site network in which 10 sites each featured one Democrat. Thirty-six domains were registered within eight minutes on September 15. The pages invite AI crawlers, use llms.txt files and question-and-answer copy, and tag articles as news in hidden code, according to the report. ChatGPT cited the network in 19 of 37 NPR queries. Candidates have denied involvement, and the operator is unknown.

Meanwhile, the Justice Department identified about $29.1 million in newly charged Minnesota benefits fraud from Sept. 30 to Oct. 30, part of nearly $83 million in intended losses among 13 people charged, convicted, or sentenced. Cases involved Medicaid, child nutrition, and SNAP. Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter described Minnesota as the epicenter for fraud in America. Alleged schemes include false Feeding Our Future meal claims and an $8.2 million Medicaid case. Officials cited more than 1,000 subpoenas and over 40 warrants. FOX 9 reported that court cases to date allege about $550 million in Minnesota fraud compared with more than $14.6 billion in Florida, and that Democrats have accused the administration of selective enforcement.

Separately, eligible nonprofit hospitals buy drugs at steep discounts and sell them at retail price, retaining the difference. Patients and payers spent $244 billion last year, and covered entities paid about $100 billion. Sales grew 152 percent from 2020 to 2025, and no federal rule requires hospitals to report how they use the money. Hospital groups sued to block a 2027 rebate pilot. 340B Health, a hospital advocacy group, has stated that 340B hospitals devote more of their savings to uncompensated care than non-340B hospitals.

Economy

China’s central bank, securities regulators, and some firms and funds will meet today on expanding a relending program for share buybacks after the CSI 300 fell 8.5 percent in October, dropped for a record 12 straight weeks, and entered a bear market, the steepest monthly drop since early 2016. Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, and BNP Paribas pointed to state-backed ETF buying. Official manufacturing and non-manufacturing PMIs contracted in October.

Fitch Ratings put the U.S. private credit default rate at 6.3 percent over 12 months, a series high after five quarterly deteriorations. It counted 27 default events in the third quarter and 91 unique borrowers over the year. About 88 percent involved restructurings rather than bankruptcy. Rates reached 9.7 percent in industrials and manufacturing. Moody’s saw a 4 percent middle-market default rate rise to 5.8 percent, including distressed exchanges. Many 2020-2022 loans come due in 2027 and 2028. By contrast, Proskauer’s Private Credit Default Index, which tracks senior-secured and unitranche loans, showed a 2.41 percent default rate in the third quarter, down from 2.51 percent.

In a Fringe Finance commentary, Quoth the Raven argued that an Nvidia miss could unwind the AI bull market after Google and Amazon missed estimates. Nvidia has beaten consensus in 15 straight quarters since early 2023, yet shares fell after seven of its last 12 reports. QTR said Nvidia is the core of the AI spending thesis and that a weak beat would reopen questions on hyperscaler spending. Seaport’s Jay Goldberg was cited as a rare sell, with a $180 target.

Health

A study of 46 children in the Journal of the American Medical Association Network Open found that kids who ate more ultra-processed foods had stronger brain-reward responses to pictures of cookies or fries, and those responses tracked later body mass index and body-fat gains. U.S. children get about 67 percent of calories from such foods. The study was observational and did not prove cause and effect. The University of Southern California’s Dr. Kathleen Page said childhood brains are sensitive to food.

Artificial Intelligence

The family of Bowen Wan is suing OpenAI and Sam Altman after she died of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy in February 2026. The suit states she used ChatGPT-4o to taper off medication without her doctors’ knowledge. Logs show a cut from 400 milligrams daily to zero. The suit says the chatbot praised hiding the plan. After an apparent seizure, she asked if it was a major issue. The bot said there was no need to worry too much about her health, according to the suit. OpenAI said ChatGPT is not a substitute for medical care. The company also said the case involved an older version of ChatGPT and that newer models are better at recognizing when a situation needs urgent attention.

European Politics

An essay published at Sonar21 characterized the recent clash at Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal as part of a European pattern of using courts, intelligence services, and EU money after elections. Since 2023, Donald Tusk’s government has refused to recognize the Tribunal. On October 30, Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska suspended Chief Justice Bogdan Święczkowski, riot police blocked him, and President Karol Nawrocki entered around 1 a.m. Tusk said there can be no compromise. The essay also cited Romania’s annulled 2024 vote, a French conviction of Marine Le Pen, Germany’s intelligence label on the AfD, and about €137 billion released after Tusk took office.
