Reports on COVID variant XFG, referred to in some coverage as “American COVID,” cite rates of 0.5 in 100,000 to 2 in 100,000, below 6 in 100,000 last autumn. Dr. Kaywaan Khan told The Mirror that symptoms match a cold, including hoarseness that a cold can also cause. The Independent reported that the winter vaccine targets the strain. The NHS said most symptomatic people need no lateral flow test. OffGuardian has argued that less testing protects earlier vaccination campaigns. UKHSA said the variant has circulated for around a year, current data does not indicate more severe illness, and cases remain at low levels.

Privacy & Surveillance

Carli Michelle Heller of Bonita Springs, Florida, was arrested after Anthropic’s Claude flagged a diary chat for an alleged threat to shoot up the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. A reviewer reported it. She faces a second-degree felony for a written threat to kill or injure. Officials said AI users are never anonymous. Anthropic allows disclosure to prevent harm and may train on flagged chats after an opt-out. Reports of other cases have involved scanning and police referrals.

Customs and Border Protection says facial biometrics have verified more than 1 billion travelers at all international-arrival airports, 66 exits, 42 seaports, all pedestrian border lanes, and some vehicle lanes. It received $673 million under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act to reach every port and struck cruise data deals. It reports more than 600,000 overstayers and 2,300 impostors since 2018. Citizens are allowed to opt out, and photos are reportedly discarded within 12 hours. Airlines must send reservation data before takeoff. CBP reported over 98 percent accuracy at international airport entries.

The Justice Department told the Fifth Circuit that Flock camera data lacks Fourth Amendment protection because, in its view, roadside watching is modern life. Weisbuch described the scans as episodic. Judge Elrod asked about cameras on every corner. Brownlee’s lawyers say warrantless Flock and Vigilant data rebuilt his movements and found his car in two and a half hours. No ruling has been issued. A federal judge in Oklahoma rejected such tracking, Texas paused Flock spending, and a federal ban bill is pending.

Energy

Atlas Atomics, co-founded by Vivek Ramaswamy, raised about $400 million in a Series A funding round that valued the company at roughly $1.9 billion, led by General Catalyst with participation from Andreessen Horowitz. It is pursuing a CANDU-style heavy-water reactor on natural uranium, skipping enrichment and a giant pressure vessel. It joined DOE’s Nuclear Energy Launch Pad and has pointed to Utah. America lacks CANDU fuel fabrication and heavy water. AtkinsRealis filed a notice of intent to license CANDUs in the U.S. Nuclear startups have raised $4.6 billion this year.

Meanwhile, NASA and the Energy Department signed a space nuclear pact effective November 1. It covers Freedom, a 2028 Mars nuclear-electric craft, Lunar Reactor-1 by 2030, and radioisotope power for Dragonfly. A moon reactor has been estimated at $20 billion over seven years. Antares has a $161 million Space Force award for a 35-kilowatt space reactor after Mark-0 went critical. Lockheed Martin is funding fission work and backing Radiant Nuclear.

Education

In the U.S., a PJ Media column has argued that an education cartel of unions and politicians sidelines students while dues continue. It cites Jonathan Turley on record-low K-12 satisfaction and notes the Janus ruling on forced dues. The writer noted grade floors of 50, Harvard teaching high school math, a 30-fold rise since 2020 in UC San Diego students below high school math, and most California students below grade level. The column presented vouchers as competition.

In the U.K., a TrendCompass commentary described European leaders as priming the public, including children, for war with Russia. According to the commentary, Boris Johnson floated peaceful ground forces, Jacob Rees-Mogg spoke of dying for country, UK media ran 250-plus Russia stories in a week, a London trip gave 14-year-olds a Private Peaceful hunt on execution and underage enlistment, Dmytro Gordon previewed an event within two weeks, Spanish media cited a CIA Mediterranean drone warning, and France’s Jupiter depicts choosing war with Russia.

Economy

China spent a record $158.8 billion on more than 1,000 tonnes of gold in eight months, versus $96.5 billion on 886 tonnes for all of 2025, as Chinese holdings of U.S. Treasuries hit $618 billion, the lowest since 2008. India scrapped a bank IGST exemption on precious imports after lifting gold and silver duties to 15 percent and after Prime Minister Modi asked the public to skip gold for a year.

Meanwhile, workers returning from China’s October 1-7 National Day holiday reported factories emptied, owners gone, and wages unpaid. In Xiaogan, Zhao said a hardware plant had been moved. In Putian, Dong was owed more than two months at a shoe factory. In Yongkang, more than 60 workers at a cup factory had gone three months without pay and guarded gear. A Hangzhou gym owner disappeared, according to reports. Anonymous accounts could not be independently verified.

In other news, a Goldman SpaceX note prices a gigawatt of AI compute at $40-50 billion a year on spot rent, $20-30 billion on term deals, and $12 billion for a hyperscaler seeking a decent return, a gap set against more than $1 trillion a year of AI capital spending.

Canadian Politics

Psychiatrists Gary Rodin and Madeline Li wrote in the New York Times that, in their view, Canadian assisted dying is no longer a last resort. They built a hospital program and said some who should not qualify are approved, with poverty and loneliness in requests. They called the law among the most permissive, now 5 percent of deaths. For example, they described a woman in her 70s approved after she could no longer cook Sunday dinner. Dr. Rodin later said the woman had an underlying health condition that qualified her for the procedure.

Environment

A Flinders University study in Environmental Research Letters finds resource output tracked population only until the early 1960s, after which ecology shrank as numbers rose and fossil fuels hid the gap, according to the researchers. Corey Bradshaw said Earth cannot meet today’s demand without major changes. Population may reach 12.4 billion around 2070. A paper in Sustainable Development urges four billion people by 2200, calling a slow drop less disruptive than the last century’s quadrupling.

Geopolitics

President Trump said Ukraine needs a new president. He argued that Volodymyr Zelensky refused chances to end a war that, in Trump’s view, should never have started. He said Zelensky hit Russian diesel after a September 4 understanding not to strike energy sites. Kyiv criticized a U.S. deal for nearly two million extra tons of Russian diesel. Zelensky called talks a smokescreen and said Russian oil sites should be hit because they fund the war. Zelensky said Ukraine is ready to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries if Russia ceases attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, provided steps are reciprocal and backed by guarantees.
