France imposed 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfews in Lille, Douai, Wattignies, and Denain after Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said police had lost control in several cities. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu barred a full Paris curfew while leaving a state of emergency available. President Macron refused Nuñez’s resignation and flew to the Gulf with TotalEnergies and Engie executives to secure diesel and oil after protests raised fuel prices. Arrests reached nearly 2,400, with almost 1,000 officers injured, seven seriously, and at least 3,000 businesses damaged or looted. Macron blamed ultra-left agitators joined by delinquents.
Meanwhile, one commentary asserts that 54 groups, including communists, socialists, and Islamists, drove the riots rather than students. Only 16 are described as student or youth groups, with 38 called adult-run parties, unions, revolutionary groups, and outlets. The network is said to include Tricontinental and CodePink, both tied to Shanghai-based Marxist millionaire Neville Roy Singham, and to have backed anti-Israel and anti-America protests in the United States.
Éric Zemmour told French TV station LCI the riots showed the true face of the Great Replacement, describing hordes of North African and African barbarians who ransack cities, citing Palestinian, Algerian, and Moroccan flags, and alleging Antifa allies, left-wing party LFI backing, looting, and hatred of France as revenge for colonization. The Reconquête leader, who finished fourth in 2022, uses the term to describe what he sees as native Europeans being demographically supplanted by non-European immigrants. LFI lawmakers referred Zemmour’s remarks to prosecutors, describing them as incitement to racial hatred.
Separately, the European Parliament approved a non-binding resolution condemning the Muslim Brotherhood, which French MEP Céline Imart called a European first. Backed by the European People’s Party after US terrorist designations of the Brotherhood and four branches, it warns that organized Islamist networks threaten democratic institutions, religious freedom, the rule of law, and equality between men and women. It seeks scrutiny of Qatari and Turkish funding, transparency on EU grants, and possible EU terrorist listings. The European Network Against Racism called the text discriminatory.
Health
Marie-Claire Hoyle, a Royal Liverpool University Hospital nurse in the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 trial, developed transverse myelitis two weeks after her second dose in August 2020. An MRI confirmed spinal inflammation, and the trial halted temporarily. She has said she regained much mobility, but nerve pain, weak fingertip grip, and chest numbness persist, with damage that will never fully heal. The Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme rejected her £120,000 claim for falling below its 60 percent disability threshold after conceding the vaccine caused the injury and that she had been harmed at up to 60 percent at the time. She received a high five-figure Oxford University settlement and has stated she wants payouts for lasting harm, not a rigid cutoff. That all said, Hoyle has said she remains supportive of vaccines and had her youngest son vaccinated in 2021.

Elon Musk intends to give one SpaceX share to every American child, with President Trump confirming placement inside Trump Accounts. In a recent piece, Redacted notes families cannot refuse the shares and must hold them for at least five years or until age 18. The commentary says Musk could gain tax benefits while parking millions of untradable shares, and it notes NASA funding from 2006 plus later federal contracts.
US Politics
At Northern Kentucky University, President Donald Trump said the Department of War would invest $100 million in Antheia’s Winchester pharmaceutical-ingredient plant only if Republicans win next month’s midterms, adding Democrats would not be able to do it. Department details were not provided. He called it the most important midterm in the country’s history and told supporters to pretend he is on the ballot.

In Germany, two electricity startups have folded as wholesale prices rose and renewable rules shifted. Grüüün will stop serving about 200,000 homes on October 31, 2026, citing the Renewable Energy Sources Act’s 2027 overhaul, a government focus on gas generation, and rising grid charges. Stromee exited after SWK Energie took over a low five-digit number of customers. German gas storage was 60 percent full on October 15, below the EU average of 74 percent, the EU’s lowest since at least 2011. Importer VNG said diversified imports mean no shortage.
In the U.S., the Energy Department unveiled a $100 billion Paducah AI hub on a former Kentucky uranium site, aiming for 2032 with 8,000 construction jobs and 600 permanent posts. Brookfield would build 1.8 gigawatts of data halls and NextEra 2 gigawatts of gas generation plus 2.6 gigawatts of batteries on dedicated power. JPMorgan had trouble placing $38 billion of Stargate debt, OpenAI paused a UK site over power prices, and Oracle issued force majeure on a 2.45-gigawatt New Mexico campus after gas permits failed. Gallup found 71 percent of Americans oppose local AI data centers, with over $130 billion in projects blocked or delayed. Paducah Mayor George Bray and McCracken County Judge Executive Craig Clymer have publicly disagreed over a community benefit agreement for the project.
Geopolitics
A US official denied Iran’s claim that American forces struck the Konarak naval base on October 19 and said the Iranian account was inaccurate. Iranian media said two light projectiles injured two personnel and that Super Hornets from the USS George H.W. Bush answered an alleged attempt to target a US destroyer. The attack and casualty reports remain unverified.
