At the U.N. General Assembly, with Iranian delegates present, President Trump asked whether he should annihilate the Islamic Republic quickly so they never kill again, or drive them into hell with no chance of survival. He said Iran violated a ceasefire for nuclear talks by attacking civilian ships. Iran’s delegation walked out during his remarks, and Cuba’s delegation walked out after he called Cuba an absolutely failed state (despite US sanctions being credited for the failing state of Cuba). Trump later told reporters the United States had a very good meeting with the Iranian delegation.
Government and open-source tallies show U.S. aircraft losses since operations involving Iran began February 28. Reaper losses totaled 24 to at least 47, about a quarter of the fleet. An MQ-4C Triton was lost. Two KC-135s were destroyed, up to seven damaged, and six airmen died in a March collision. Three F-15Es were lost to friendly fire and one over Iran. Rescue operations cost two MC-130Js and four MH-6s. An E-3G Sentry was lost, and an F-35A took fire. The Congressional Budget Office estimated costs at $1.9 to $3.3 billion through August 1 and said half to two-thirds of key interceptors are expended, requiring a five-year rebuild. Commanders have warned of reduced Pacific capacity. Pentagon costs exceed $38 billion.
Speaking of capacity, a comparison circulating on X showed China’s DJI reporting yearly output capacity of 34 million drones compared against estimated U.S. production of about 100,000 per year. Planned U.S. Drone Dominance procurement through 2028 is around 340,000, a gap of roughly 300 to 1. China also dominates processing of many critical minerals.
In other news, the United States, Denmark, and Greenland signed a security pact after Trump’s statements about taking the island. It allows new U.S. bases at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, expansion of Pituffik Space Base, and flyover, landing, and undersea rights in Greenland. An independent Greenland would have to remain in NATO. Non-NATO states are barred from an ongoing military presence. Investors from outside NATO, partner, or EU countries cannot control sensitive sectors. Both parliaments must approve, and the pact has no end date.
Energy
Trump called for the first U.S. diesel export ban in history, stating the country produces a large volume of diesel and that an announcement is expected soon. The United States is the world’s largest diesel exporter. Europe is its largest customer and has bought record volumes since Gulf supplies were interrupted, suggesting Europe will be hit hardest by a ban. Russia has already halted its exports earlier in the year. U.S. diesel reached $6.53 a gallon, and 16 percent of French stations were reported out of fuel.
Additionally, Goldman Sachs analyst Nikhil Bhandari told clients the global refining system is too constrained to support a full recovery in fuel demand while inventories rebuild. He said prices are likely to stay elevated into next year and through 2027, and that high margins would be needed to restrain consumption and limit restocking.
Meanwhile, farmers report that higher diesel, fertilizer, and equipment costs have created financial pressure as U.S. military operations involving Iran approach seven months without a formal declaration of war. AAA reported a nationwide diesel average of $6.49 a gallon, 75 percent higher than a year earlier. North Carolina farmer Matt Bell said he exceeded a $35,000 2026 fuel budget by August. Texas rancher Lynn Fleming said her August fuel bill nearly doubled. Her husband Robert said they received no warning of Strait of Hormuz operations after a 2024 pledge of no new wars. John Boyd Jr. said many farmers believe they should not be involved and that filling a 140-gallon combine at about $7 a gallon costs roughly $1,000. Most of those quoted had voted for Trump. Intelligence assessments from 2007 until the operations began indicated Iran was not building a nuclear weapon.

NIH whistleblower files, released ahead of Bill Gates’s private congressional testimony, show the Gates Foundation donated hundreds of millions of dollars and collaborated inside the agency on research direction. A 2003 $200 million gift to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health led Rice University researchers in 2008 to warn that Gates’s board was selecting NIH projects. Workshops from 2013 aligned grants across 10 programs. A former official described a complete merging of NIH and Gates. The foundation’s $55 million stake in BioNTech grew to more than $550 million. In 2015, FNIH funds hired McKinsey for Ebola work. FNIH later recognized $413 million in gifts. Neither side commented.
Education
In PISA 2025 mathematics scores for 15-year-olds, China ranked first at 612 for Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. Singapore scored 563, followed by Macao, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong. Estonia led Europe at 508. The United States scored 463, matching the OECD average and ranking 27th. Canada ranked 11th and Britain 10th. More than 760,000 students in 91 countries took part. OECD averages fell 22 points from 2015 to 2025, about one year of learning.
Meanwhile, Andrew Coates, 22, a Nebraska volunteer firefighter and licensed EMT, was rejected for paid work at Fremont Fire because he was homeschooled. The posting required a high school diploma. After the rejection, the city changed it to require an accredited diploma. He has 78 college credits and a 3.8367 GPA. Nebraska law reserves the GED for non-graduates. His fire chief told the Civil Service Commission the city was discriminating. About 30 homeschool families attended. The commission noted ambiguity but said it cannot change policy. Officials maintained the requirement, and a court challenge is being prepared.
Economy
SB Energy delayed its IPO after investor concerns and public criticism over data centers. An $18 billion leveraged loan backing Oracle’s $165 billion, 4.5-gigawatt New Mexico data center, Project Jupiter, had fallen to about 89 to 91 cents on the dollar. People close to the company said it still intends to proceed with the IPO and is evaluating market conditions.
In a recent essay, QTR of Fringe Finance asked whether Monday’s nearly 3 percent Nasdaq rally after a 25-basis-point Fed increase to 3.75–4.00 percent was a gamma squeeze. Leopold Aschenbrenner’s Situational Awareness fund, after declining from about $45 billion toward $10 billion, had reportedly bought calls on AMD, Bloom Energy, CoreWeave, SK Hynix, SanDisk, and a memory ETF. META posted record call volume. The author treated the squeeze explanation as unproven. CNBC reported the Nasdaq Composite reaching a fresh all-time high with continued strength around AI-related stocks.

The Second Circuit ruled that Customs and Border Protection may search phones and copy their contents at the border without a warrant, probable cause, or suspicion, including for returning U.S. citizens. It declined to extend Riley v. California, describing a border property search as routine, and said the exception covers digital contraband and is not limited to border crimes.
