In a recent post, Chris Hedges argues that the United States has spent 25 years unwittingly fulfilling Osama bin Laden’s original aim of ending American imperialism, with Donald Trump’s Iran campaign as the final strategic blunder. The war has damaged Gulf oil infrastructure, alienated allies, and disrupted global oil supplies. Hedges notes that the post-9/11 wars cost $8 trillion, caused an estimated 4.5–4.8 million deaths and added $40 trillion in debt. Administration officials have nevertheless described the operation as a tremendous success.
Speaking of the Iran War, the Financial Times reports the US Navy has cut its air-defense coverage for commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz to two specific daily time slots. Iran and Oman are reportedly close to a deal on safe passage.
Additionally, the Wall Street Journal reports Iran has resumed ballistic missile production at underground facilities including Khojir. Analysts estimate hundreds to thousands of missiles could be built. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had claimed in April that Iran’s missile program was “functionally destroyed.”
US Politics
Former congressman and Presidential candidate Ron Paul says the Pentagon’s Office of Strategic Capital taking a 35 percent stake in North American Blue Energy Partners shows corporatism expanding under the Trump administration. In his view, the deal makes the United States a partner of Venezuela’s current government and gives Washington a reason to keep that leadership in power. Paul notes that since 2025 the U.S. government has invested in more than 30 private companies, leaving firms nominally private but increasingly steered by political priorities. He warns that pairing this government-business merger with foreign deals could turn protecting those investments into a pretext for sending U.S. troops abroad.
Separately, Trump issued an executive order on September 8 expanding the Interior Secretary’s authority under the Defense Production Act, allowing the Interior, Energy and Commerce Secretaries to prioritise energy contracts and allocate resources for national defense. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum visited Venezuela in March to meet Delcy Rodriguez. Trump subsequently announced a deal for control of 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan reserves. The move is described by some as advancing U.S. energy security interests.
In other news, the Census Bureau posted a proposed rule to exclude illegal immigrants and non-permanent legal residents from apportionment counts, citing the historical meaning of “usual residence.” The rule would also remove race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation questions from the short-form census. New York Attorney General Letitia James is exploring legal action, arguing the Constitution requires counting every resident regardless of status. Supporters contend the rule aligns with the historical meaning of usual residence and prevents distortion of representation.
Cautionary Tales from the UK
A taxpayer-funded programme in Wales costing over £1.3 million has trained staff at more than 300 nurseries, playgroups and childminders through Cardiff Metropolitan University’s DARPL toolkit to identify “racist incidents” among toddlers and, if judged a hate crime, contact police. Staff audit toys for diversity, rate their own “white privilege” on a five-point scale, and follow a flowchart that includes disciplinary steps for uncooperative children. Kent Police logged a one-year-old girl as a crime suspect. Freedom of Information data showed 683 children under 10 reported for offences across three years, though the age of criminal responsibility is 10. The 2012 Amherst study cited as scientific backing found that nine-month-olds recognise familiar faces better than unfamiliar ones. Reports have also covered incidents such as the arrest of an 11-year-old boy on suspicion of racially aggravated assault.
A leaked Cabinet Office document states that 66% of places on a taxpayer-funded Civil Service talent programme are ringfenced for ethnic minority, disabled, or lower-socioeconomic candidates. The department cites the Equality Act’s “positive action” provisions. MI5’s 2026/27 Summer Internship is closed to white applicants. The National Audit Office ran a Newcastle internship barring middle-class white men. West Yorkshire Police gave ethnic minority candidates 446 days to apply against 99 for white British applicants. The Bar Council is defending a whites-excluded scheme in court. The Treasury scrapped its numerical reasoning test in 2020, stating it had an “adverse impact on candidate diversity.” Official figures show ethnic minority representation in the Civil Service at 19.2% against a working-age population of 19.6%, and declared disability at 18.4%.
Meanwhile, the first ministers of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will meet in Cardiff on Monday to discuss independence and the future of the UK. All three now lead governments whose parties support leaving the United Kingdom. Scotland’s John Swinney said the momentum for constitutional change is undeniable and that Westminster should prepare for a post-UK future. Recent polling shows 32% support for Welsh independence, 52% in Scotland once undecideds are excluded, and about 42% for Irish reunification in Northern Ireland.
Artificial Intelligence
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier,” stating that recursive self-improvement is occurring across the industry and citing a July incident where OpenAI-Hugging Face agents hacked unauthorised targets. He proposes embedding third-party evaluators inside labs, antitrust waivers for lab coordination, and dialogue with Beijing on red lines. Elon Musk endorsed the essay. Sam Altman committed OpenAI to independent evaluators. Chinese open-weight models, including DeepSeek, Alibaba’s Qwen, and Moonshot’s Kimi K3, are priced at 10-40% of US frontier labs. Congressional bills, including an AI Kill Switch Act, have followed. President Trump stated his concern is losing to China. Skeptics suggest the alignment may reflect efforts to protect market positions against lower-cost competitors.
Energy
China’s new five-year automotive plan targets electric and hybrid vehicles at 70% of passenger sales by 2030, with 40% of commercial vehicles electric. New energy vehicles reached 65% of passenger sales in August. Sinopec projects Chinese oil demand falling 8.9% in 2026, with gasoline down 8.7% and diesel down 11.4%. That all said, some analysts project continued oil demand growth in non-OECD Asia.
Health
A Danish study in Human Reproduction Open reports that infant girls exposed to acetaminophen in utero had ovaries 40% smaller, wombs 13% smaller, and 23% fewer ovarian follicles at three months old. A follow-up cohort of 1,210 girls showed smaller uteruses at puberty. Researcher Margit Bistrup Fischer stated that causality is not established. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists maintained current guidelines.
Meanwhile, an Experimental and Clinical Sciences Journal study, drawing on a leaked Israeli Ministry of Health pharmacovigilance dataset, states that Israel warned the CDC and European Medicines Agency of a myocarditis signal on February 28, 2021, following Pfizer COVID vaccination. US physicians received no formal CDC guidance until May 28, and FDA warnings came in late June. By the dataset’s final version, myocarditis or pericarditis appeared in 250 of 531 hospitalisation reports, and in over 70% of reports among patients under 30. Among males under 20, 85% of hospitalisations involved cardiac inflammation. The record included a nine-year-old girl and a 22-year-old woman who died of fulminant myocarditis. The FDA expanded authorisation to adolescents aged 12-15 on May 10. Author Yaffa Shir-Raz challenges the “rare and mild” framing, citing Nordic data showing 5.55-18.39 excess cases per 100,000 in young males after a second dose.
