Iran War
Saudi Arabia shut down its 1,200-km East-West pipeline after drone strikes by Iraqi militias, after which Baghdad dismissed the military commander for Maysan province. Houthi forces took control of Perim Island at the Bab el-Mandeb, with Reuters reporting IRGC guidance. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman requested US military assistance, but Washington refused direct action, offering intelligence and targeting support instead.
Other recent developments include Houthi control of the Bab al-Mandeb, Iranian strikes on vessels, revived Somali piracy, higher US fuel prices, and Brent and WTI now above $100.
On the diplomatic front, Iran will meet with GCC states and Iraq in Oman on Monday to discuss the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei described the talks as focused on regional security.
Artificial Intelligence
In reaction to the Iran War, the UAE is revising plans for its five-gigawatt AI data center project after Iranian strikes damaged AWS facilities in the Emirates and Bahrain in March. Six sources told Reuters the Abu Dhabi campus will be dispersed across multiple sites with added defenses.
Energy
Industry officials at Singapore’s APPEC conference stated that the global diesel market faces further tightening. Vitol CEO Russell Hardy said refining capacity remains insufficient and inventories continue to draw down. Iranian strikes on Middle Eastern refineries, Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries, and Russia’s diesel export ban through at least September have added pressure. US refineries have operated at high rates through summer. Kuwait Petroleum’s Shaikh Khaled Ahmad Al Sabah warned of a difficult winter in Northwest Europe.
Meanwhile, Permian natural gas reportedly traded at negative prices on 118 of the first 131 trading days this year. Chevron subsidiary Energy Forge One signed a 20-year agreement with Microsoft in June to construct a 2.67-gigawatt behind-the-meter gas plant next to a Pecos data center, with power expected in 2028. RBC has identified roughly 38 gigawatts of announced behind-the-meter gas capacity in Texas. These projects avoid grid connection and are therefore unaffected by Governor Greg Abbott’s August 3 pause on new grid-connected data center approvals, which followed 474 gigawatts of interconnection requests against 85 gigawatts of peak demand.
Geopolitics
Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service stated that Brussels is urging Kyiv to conscript women, citing EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas’s reported description of the idea as a step forward and referencing Israel as an example. Ukraine’s mobilization has included reports of forced recruitment, with approximately 1.15 million fighting-age Ukrainian men residing in the EU and more than 70 apparent draft evaders killed since 2022 while attempting to cross borders. Current law requires mobilization only for men aged 25 to 60. Former UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace and former US Army Europe commander Ben Hodges have stated that broader conscription should have been implemented. Russian officials have described the conflict as a Western proxy war. Ukrainian officials have described the SVR claims as disinformation.
Haaretz reported three claims regarding Gaza. Three foreign senior sources said UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed warned Netanyahu a week and a half before October 7, 2023, that Yahya Sinwar was planning a major operation, which Netanyahu allegedly did not share with security officials. Palestinian mediator Samir Mashharawi stated that Hamas offered on October 7 to release all civilian hostages in exchange for opening a communication channel, an offer Israel rejected. A senior Israeli defense official confirmed that hostage release was not among the government’s initial war objectives. An IDF reserve major and drone operator described soldiers firing on clearly marked paramedics in Rafah and using an undisclosed boundary to justify strikes on farmers. Netanyahu’s office has called the UAE warning claim an absolute lie.
Economy
Jim Rickards estimated that China’s official gold reserves plus hidden state holdings could total roughly 4,700 tonnes. He said a gold-backed yuan is unrealistic because China’s gold is only a small share of its money supply, and the yuan cannot become the world’s reserve currency because China’s markets lack the depth, openness, and legal protections of the U.S. Treasury market. The real aim, he argued, is to stockpile physical gold and build trading, clearing, and storage capacity in Shanghai and Hong Kong so China can operate outside the dollar system if sanctions or a break with the United States force it to. Other analysts, including the World Gold Council, say China’s gold buying is better read as ordinary reserve diversification – and as a way to build confidence in the yuan – than as a plan to break from the dollar or wage a currency war.

Dr. Robert Malone noted limited attention to the nose and sinuses as sites for preventive measures against respiratory pathogens. He cited a randomized trial of nearly 14,000 people in which saline nasal spray at the first sign of infection reduced days of illness. Hypochlorous acid, listed on the WHO’s 2025 essential medicines list, has shown favorable safety and some efficacy in randomized nasal trials for chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis. No large trial has tested it against acute respiratory viruses.
British Politics
An opinion piece by Steve Watson criticized the installation of Tschabalala Self’s Lady in Blue on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth, describing it as part of a series of commissions under Mayor Sadiq Khan that includes works such as a monument to “marginalized” trans sex workers. Apple’s Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 include Live Rewind and Siri Recap features that allow replay of the last 15 seconds of conversation or generation of summaries. The features are opt-in for the device owner and effectively record conversations. Apple states that audio processing occurs locally, summaries are auto-deleted after seven days unless saved, and a chime sounds during recording. Summaries can be exported and retained indefinitely by the wearer. Critics have raised concerns regarding consent for individuals with earshot of the person wearing the watch.
