Geopolitics
Iran’s state media reported strikes on Sirik, Minab County, and Qeshm Island. President Trump stated the war (and he used the word “war”) would end immediately after the election. The IRGC announced a “20 for 2” doctrine and conditions for ending hostilities, including cessation of attacks, Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, an end to the Yemen blockade, release of $24 billion in assets, and no interference with Iran’s nuclear and missile programs. CENTCOM denied IRGC claims of strikes on U.S. vessels and stated U.S. forces destroyed ten Iranian tankers in a week. A Panama-flagged tanker carrying 2 million barrels of Iraqi fuel oil was struck by a drone in Iraqi waters.
Meanwhile, Ansarallah forces reportedly seized the coast, including Mocha, gaining complete control over the Bab al-Mandab strait. Pakistani sources told Türkiye Today that Islamabad may conduct airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen under the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement. Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stated Pakistan is bound to honor the pact. Pakistan has deployed roughly 8,000 troops, jets, drones, and air defenses to Saudi Arabia. Analyst Zeeshan Shah suggested Pakistan’s role may remain limited to logistical support. Pakistani outlets have reported that Islamabad has not discussed any military response under the pact.
Separately, the U.S.-Saudi 123 nuclear agreement signed July 22 does not require Riyadh to sign the IAEA Additional Protocol, the agency’s most expansive inspection standard, which allows unannounced visits even at undeclared sites. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said the safeguards text would instead grant verification authority over enrichment, conversion, and reprocessing that is “very, very similar.” Enrichment plants would use a “black box” model operated by U.S. firms. Congress has 90 days to review. The Foundation for Defense of Democracies noted that among 51 active 123 partners, only Argentina and Brazil lack the Additional Protocol.

Brent traded above $102. HSBC reported Hormuz flows at roughly 30 percent of pre-conflict levels and raised its 2026 Brent forecast to $90. Vitol CEO Russell Hardy estimated 10 million barrels per day crossing the strait. Goldman Sachs estimated 15-16 million bpd including “dark fleet” tankers. U.S. diesel crack spreads traded near $102, national gasoline above $4 per gallon, and European natural gas above 81 euros. Some market observers noted that disruptions have not yet produced a complete supply crisis.
In other news, Lausanne-based Fusionality, founded by Google DeepMind alumni Federico Felici and Jonas Buchli, raised $3.7 million in pre-seed funding from Founderful and Playfair to develop standardized control systems for fusion reactors. The pair previously worked on teaching AI to control an experimental tokamak—Felici at EPFL and later DeepMind, Buchli leading robotics and reinforcement learning at DeepMind—and said roughly 80 percent of each fusion company’s control stack is identical across projects.
US Politics
President Trump pledged a $5,000 dividend to every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans win both chambers in November. Critics described the proposal as a conditional campaign promise that could involve significant additional borrowing.
Meanwhile, a D.C. Circuit panel upheld a ruling blocking the IRS from sharing taxpayer addresses with ICE, finding the April 2025 memorandum violated Section 6103. The IRS had transferred 47,289 records before the stay. Separately, the DOJ asked the Supreme Court to permit use of the SAVE database to verify voter citizenship after a D.C. Circuit ruling that bulk queries illegally disclose Social Security data. Judge Gregory Katsas dissented.
Economy
HSBC chief commodities economist Paul Bloxham stated that a broad-based “super-squeeze” is occurring across commodities. London copper traded above $14,700 per ton, Brent above $101, and the Bloomberg Commodity Index reached a 14-year high. HSBC models a 22 percent average price rise in 2026, citing conflicts involving Iran and Russia-Ukraine, El Niño effects, and demand from AI and electrification. The bank cited inventory drawdowns, supply disruptions, and rising prices for grain, cocoa, and coffee. HSBC’s COCCLES model indicates the market is in a “super-bull” phase. Some observers have questioned the sustainability of current price surges, referencing prior HSBC forecast misses.
The AdvisorShares Psychedelic ETF (PSIL) outperformed the S&P 500 by roughly 32 percent this year. Eli Lilly acquired AtaiBeckley for roughly $2.8 billion upfront, with up to $1 billion in milestones, for the treatment-resistant depression candidate BPL-003. The Wall Street Journal reported that early SpaceX investors Antonio Gracias and Steve Jurvetson have invested in psychedelic medicine companies, including Gracias’s $25 million into Lykos Therapeutics and $16 million into Harvard research. Steve Cohen, David Bronner, and members of the Pritzker family have also funded trials. QTR noted remaining risks including FDA decisions, trial design, and reimbursement.
Health
Insilico Medicine reported that its AI-designed drug rentosertib shifted all six proteomic aging clocks toward younger biological ages in a Phase IIa trial of 42 patients. Patients on 60 mg daily gained a mean 98.4 ml in forced vital capacity versus a 20.3 ml decline on placebo. A 320-patient Phase III trial is underway. Analysts noted that the findings derive from a small secondary analysis in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and require further replication.
Artificial Intelligence
OpenAI announced a proposed solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the Clay Mathematics Institute’s Millennium Prize Problems, which asks whether the equations for fluid motion can break down even when they start from smooth conditions. Mathematician Tristan Buckmaster raised questions about timing and credit regarding related unpublished work. OpenAI denied accessing unpublished work but stated product usage may have contributed to model improvements.
