A leaked Secretary of Defense Orders Book reportedly shows formal objections from commanders of European, Pacific, and Southern Commands, along with the Navy’s top admiral, to an August order extending Middle East deployments. According to the Washington Post, the commanders cited degradation of homeland-defense capabilities. The Pentagon stated the reporting was inaccurate. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has resigned after months of disagreements with Secretary Hegseth, and Deputy Undersecretary Dave Fitzgerald is also leaving. Both had supported integration of small tech firms and private equity into Army modernization.
President Trump stated on Truth Social that communities opposing AI data center construction would become “backwards and poor” and accused critics of aiding China. Gallup polling found roughly seven in ten Americans oppose such facilities locally due to impacts on power, water, and utility bills. A modern AI center can use electricity equivalent to 100,000 homes and 300,000 gallons of water daily. Some Republican candidates and officials have proposed moratoriums or audits. Twenty-four Democratic-led states and DC are suing USPS over a rule implementing Executive Order 14399, which requires uniform ballot envelopes and delivery only to voters on federally vetted lists. Irving Oil has committed $235 million to Operation Osprey, a 75-day turnaround at its 320,000-b/d Saint John refinery in New Brunswick, Canada. The project will involve about 2,100 workers from 55 firms and include the first major overhaul of the residual fluid catalytic cracking unit since 2000. Vietnam’s BSR has begun a $1.489-billion expansion of its Dung Quat refinery, awarding EPC work to a China Chengda–Beijing Petrochemical consortium and project management to a Wood–PVE team. The 37-month project aims to raise capacity from 148,000 to 171,000 b/d, increase crude flexibility, and enable Euro 5 fuel production by 2028. BSR is seeking about $600 million in external debt.
