Furthermore, the DOJ was directed to investigate states for alleged violations of parental rights and religious exemptions. Brian Hooker of Children’s Health Defense stated that delaying vaccination past the first day of life could lower infant mortality. Critics have raised concerns that spacing out doses could increase missed vaccinations amid ongoing disease outbreaks.
Meanwhile, in Canada, an 83-year-old woman, Brigitte Stegemann, was euthanized in Ontario in July despite her family having previously refused MAID on religious grounds. Medical staff reportedly initiated discussions and arranged the procedure while her granddaughter (who held power of attorney) was away on vacation. The family reported she could not answer basic questions during a capacity assessment, yet was deemed capable, and the procedure proceeded after she remained silent during final consent. The care home and physician have not publicly responded to the family’s allegations.
US Politics
Senators Ron Johnson and Rand Paul released texts from Dr. Anthony Fauci’s government phone obtained from HHS on August 5. In a January 2021 exchange, Fauci wrote that a second COVID-19 vaccine dose “theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester.” The phone reportedly contains over 34,000 texts and 522 voicemails. Fauci had publicly stated around the same time that there were no red flags for vaccinating pregnant women.
Energy
The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve fell below 300 million barrels, with a 6.1 million barrel draw in the latest week. Industry estimates place the operational minimum between 250 and 300 million barrels. The SPR has not been this low since 1983 during its initial fill.
Economy
NVIDIA confirmed a $500 billion off-balance-sheet SPV financing package with Apollo, Blackstone, BlackRock, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR for AI infrastructure, and the company is also reportedly guaranteeing a 10-gigawatt Ohio data center leased to OpenAI. Shares fell as much as 2 percent on the announcement.
Meanwhile, Intel announced a $15 billion public offering to fund AI-related investments, with underwriters holding an option for an additional $2.25 billion. The offering follows a 175 percent year-to-date rise in Intel shares, which fell 3 percent on the news.
Goldman expects hyperscaler capex to exceed $1.4 trillion next year, and Morgan Stanley projects hyperscaler spending of $3.5 trillion from 2026 to 2028.
In the crypto space, a volunteer group reported using AI models to review roughly 150 Bitcoin repositories and disclose more than a dozen vulnerabilities. The group stated it spent about $20,000 on the effort. Earlier this year, researchers using Claude Opus 4.8 identified a four-year-old Zcash flaw that could have allowed attackers to create unlimited counterfeit Zcash.
Turning to the real economy, Subchapter V bankruptcy filings (which cover small businesses) rose 24 percent to 234, per the American Bankruptcy Institute. Contrasting this, Commercial Chapter 11 filings totaled 666 in July, down 27 percent year-over-year. Relatedly, the Senate passed the Bankruptcy Threshold Adjustment Act on August 3, raising the Subchapter V debt cap to $7.5 million and Chapter 13 limits to $2.75 million. An SBA policy effective July 4 permits combining 7(a) and 504 loans up to $10 million.
In other news, the IRS and Treasury plan to propose regulations for the Saver’s Match program, set to replace the Saver’s Credit in 2027. Eligible taxpayers would receive up to 50 percent of the first $2,000 in retirement contributions, capped at $1,000 per year, deposited into IRAs or employer plans from 2028. Single filers earning $35,500 or more and joint filers above $71,000 would not qualify. The program follows an April 30 executive order establishing TrumpIRA.gov. Analyses project the initiative could benefit millions of savers while reducing federal revenues by billions over a decade. Critics call it just another case of money-printing.

An investigation found that cameras on British K3 Scout unmanned vessels used by the Royal Marines contained Chinese-made components transmitting signals to an IP address in China. Federal officials declared a Level 1 shortage in 2021 after Mead fell below 1,075 feet, after which Nevada’s allotment was reduced. Southern Nevada’s population growth has increased demand. Exposed features include the ruins of the town of St. Thomas and a WWII-era B-29 bomber.
