Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis announced $60 million in third-year funding through the Florida Cancer Innovation Fund. The program prioritizes nutrition-focused prevention research and the repurposing of generic drugs such as ivermectin. Total commitments now reach $140 million across more than 95 researchers, supporting early-detection technology, rural clinical trials, and precision medicine.
Additionally, the FDA’s Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted to recommend adding six peptides to its 503A Bulks List: BPC-157, TB-500, KPV, MOTS-c, Semax, and Epitalon. If adopted, licensed compounding pharmacies could prepare the peptides under valid prescriptions. However, critics have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest among panel members.
In other news, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a policy ending federal funding for gain-of-function research deemed high-risk, following a May 2025 executive order. The policy adds oversight for life sciences work and ends support for institutions in countries without adequate safety standards. A 520-page House Oversight report concluded that COVID-19 likely originated at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. However, some analysts have argued that the new policy remains insufficiently restrictive.
Speaking of COVID, the Ninth Circuit ruled that Kaiser Permanente wrongly fired remote employee Mimi Weiss for declining a COVID-19 vaccine on religious grounds. The panel found her statements provided sufficient notice of her beliefs.
Privacy & Surveillance
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) introduced legislation to withhold federal funds from municipalities and police departments using Flock automated license plate readers. The bill follows similar measures from Reps. Tim Burchett and Scott Perry. Flock systems have logged roughly 4,000 immigration-related searches and other cross-state queries, according to audit records. Several cities have canceled contracts. However, supporters of such systems argue they help solve crimes effectively.
Iran War
Rep. Thomas Massie joined House Democrats led by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) in legislation directing Speaker Mike Johnson to sue the White House over compliance with a June concurrent War Powers Resolution ordering an end to hostilities with Iran. The resolution was the first adopted under Section 5(c) of the 1973 War Powers Act. Massie argues the administration’s interpretation of the 60-day clock is incorrect. The Senate has rejected a similar resolution.
Energy
Idaho’s Arco Desert is the site of new nuclear reactor prototypes. On June 4, Antares Nuclear’s Mark-0 reactor reached criticality, the first new non-lightwater design licensed in the US since 1973. Three additional prototypes followed: Valar Atomics’ Ward 250, Deployable Energy’s Unity, and Aalo Atomics’ Aalo-X. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated up to four more could reach criticality by year’s end. Several designs are small and portable. Executive orders issued in May 2025 restructured the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and set targets for new reactors by 2030. Some observers have noted safety risks and regulatory challenges associated with such deployments.
US Politics
Twelve Republican-led states, including Alabama, filed to support the Trump administration’s emergency Supreme Court application to revive Executive Order 14399. The order directs the Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration to compile citizenship-verified voter lists and instructs the Postal Service to limit mail ballot delivery to those lists. The 1st Circuit blocked the order in 23 Democratic-led states, while the D.C. Circuit reached different conclusions, creating the split cited in the filing. Challengers must respond by August 3. Solicitor General D. John Sauer stated that agencies need to begin implementation by early to mid-August for changes to affect the November election.
In Houston, U.S. District Judge David Hittner permanently barred the city from enforcing the race-based portions of its Minority, Women, and Small Business Enterprise Program. The ruling applied the Supreme Court’s 2023 Students for Fair Admissions decision to municipal contracting. The Pacific Legal Foundation represented two landscaping firms owned by a white couple. However, Hittner limited his injunction to race, meaning gender-based and small-business preferences remain in place. The city has stated it will comply with the ruling on existing contracts while evaluating a potential appeal.
Not the Bee noted that CNBC host Joe Kernen critically questioned former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb about Anthony Fauci’s released diary entries, something the site presented as unusual mainstream attention to material it views as revealing Fauci’s ego and other issues.
Speaking of Fauci, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier plans to collect evidence against Fauci for potential state prosecution. Subpoenas could be issued as early as next week. The Miami Herald described the investigation as potentially motivated by election season considerations.
Canadian Politics
Elections Alberta verified that the Stay Free Alberta petition met the threshold for an independence referendum. Of roughly 301,000 signatures submitted in May, 222,597 were validated through statistical sampling at 95 percent, exceeding the 177,732 required. The ballot question asks whether Alberta should become an independent state, although this does not currently match what’s on the ballot. The validated signatures equal about 7.5 percent of the province’s electors.
