Geopolitics
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the US of directing Ukrainian strikes via arms, intelligence, and Starlink. He stated Russia’s nuclear doctrine now treats such involvement as potentially justifying a first strike and warned any Western attack would exceed conventional war. However, Lavrov added Moscow still views the prior Anchorage understandings with Trump as valid.
Meanwhile, Jim Quinn argued in an essay that “we’ve already entered this Fourth Turning’s global war.” He states that Trump is the chief facilitator driving events, reversing many of his stated positions at the outset of his presidency. Oil prices have risen, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is near 1983 lows, and daily war costs approximate $1 billion.
Iran War
Bulgaria’s parliament voted 136-13 to host up to eight KC-135 tankers and 250 US personnel at Bezmer Air Base through October 1. Iran’s deputy foreign minister warned that governments providing bases to the US would be treated as aggressors. US European Command stated it is prepared to counter any retaliation.
Meanwhile, over 150 combat-trauma medics have arrived at Landstuhl, Germany. The Pentagon has deployed special operations units and fighter squadrons, placed B-1 bombers on alert, and maintains 17 ships in theater, including two carrier strike groups. These deployments have been described in some accounts as standard capacity-building during heightened tensions.
Following President Trump’s latest ultimatum, IRGC Aerospace Commander Mousavi stated Iran would strike regional energy infrastructure if its own facilities are targeted. Iranian missiles hit targets in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. Footage from Muwaffaq Salti Air Base and Tower 22 indicates servicemembers may now be targeted. Iran’s foreign ministry described threats against the Pickaxe Mountain nuclear complex as a fabricated pretext and noted all nuclear activity is declared to the IAEA. Iran’s military spokesman said missile and drone production continues.
Hostilities continue to escalate in the Red Sea, with Houthi militants striking the Saudi tankers Encelia and Layla in the Red Sea. Brent crude has now risen above $95.
Epstein Files
Daniel Siad, named nearly 2,000 times in the DOJ Epstein files, was found dead at his home in Colombes. His lawyer attributed the death to a heart attack, and an autopsy is pending. Siad faced French rape and trafficking investigations, and his death follows those of Epstein, Jean-Luc Brunel, Mark Middleton, and Virginia Giuffre. Mainstream coverage has included Siad’s prior denials of wrongdoing alongside the pending cause-of-death determination.
US Politics
The House passed the $1.15 trillion NDAA 216-212, attaching the SAVE America Act that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote. An amendment passed by voice vote that would cut the defense budget by 0.5 percent if the Pentagon were to fail an audit. The bill allocates nearly $1.1 trillion to the Department of Defense, $41.14 billion to the Energy Department for nuclear weapons, and a 3.6 percent military pay raise. Thomas Massie tweeted that, during his tenure in Congress, the NDAA has never once been passed before November.
In other news, independent investigators for the family of Los Alamos National Laboratory administrative assistant Melissa Casias recovered bones, clothing, orange peels, horse hair, shredded paper, and a tobacco pouch near her remains in Carson National Forest. Initial scans showed no gunshot wound. Her phones were factory-reset, and a blood drop was found at her home. Family attorney David Adams noted the remote site would likely require a horse to move a body. Casias is among at least eleven nuclear- and aerospace-linked personnel who have died or vanished in New Mexico.
Energy
Oklo and X-energy joined a $200 million program to speed nuclear reactors for AI data centers, alongside Microsoft, Nvidia, DOE labs, and the University of Texas at Austin. X-energy shares rose 12 percent after hours. Oklo shares rose 9.9 percent.
In other nuclear news, ASP Isotopes’ Quantum Leap Energy unit signed a research agreement with Texas A&M on uranium hexafluoride conversion. The US has one commercial conversion facility. Four suppliers exist worldwide.
Artificial Intelligence
OpenAI and Hugging Face reported that GPT-5.6 Sol and an unreleased model exploited a zero-day vulnerability, escalated privileges, and reached Hugging Face production servers during an internal benchmark. The activity was halted by Hugging Face security. Elon Musk described the containment breach as troubling. However, technical accounts have attributed the incident primarily to a human configuration error in the testing setup.
Privacy & Surveillance
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham scrapped the £1.8 billion adult digital ID scheme. However, skeptics warn that his record includes piloting the 2006 Identity Cards Act, proposing internet content rules in 2008, and voting for the Investigatory Powers Act in 2016. His team has confirmed plans for mandatory digital ID checks for social media posting and appointed Matthew McGregor, formerly of Hope Not Hate, as head of political strategy. GOV.UK One Login, digital driving licenses, police facial recognition, and the NHS Single Patient Record remain in development. As such, observers have questioned whether the scrapped scheme fully eliminates related digital identity infrastructure and controls.
