Geopolitics
The Israeli military announced that its troops had captured Beaufort Castle, a Crusader-built fortress on a strategic mountain near Nabatiyeh in southern Lebanon, marking the country’s deepest incursion in more than 26 years. The advance followed days of airstrikes and fighting with Hezbollah and came despite a nominal ceasefire in place since April 17, days before direct Lebanese-Israeli talks were set to resume in Washington. Defense Minister Israel Katz said an Israeli flag was raised over the castle, which Israel previously held from 1982 until its 2000 withdrawal, and that Israel intends to retain the site. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to propose continued negotiations. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot called the operations “unacceptable” and requested an emergency UN Security Council meeting. The fighting has killed 3,350 people in Lebanon and displaced more than one million, while Israel reports at least 25 soldiers killed.
Additionally, convicted spy Jonathan Pollard stated in a May 20 Arutz Sheva podcast that Israel should prepare for wars against Turkey and Egypt after operations against Iran, Gaza, and Hezbollah. He said the conflict with Turkey would not be as straightforward as with Iran and urged Israel to maintain permanent military occupation of southern Syria. Pollard was convicted of passing more than 1,000 classified cables to Mossad in 1984-85. Then-Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger testified that the espionage caused severe harm to U.S. national security. Pollard was paroled in 2015, had travel restrictions lifted in 2020, and moved to Israel. In a 2021 interview, he said Jews “will always have dual loyalty” and encouraged young Jews in U.S. security roles to spy for Israel. Some accounts have described related reports of the comments as misleading, noting the absence of official Israeli government or military endorsements.
US Politics
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont signed HB 5468 on May 26. The Home School Legal Defense Association described the law as the first reduction of homeschool freedoms in the modern homeschool movement. The statute requires annual “intent to educate” filings and checks against the state’s child abuse and neglect registry. HSLDA stated that the registry includes broad “neglect” findings, some minor or disputed, and that families sharing a household with anyone subject to an open DCF case would be barred from homeschooling. HSLDA noted that Connecticut’s “neglect” standard requires only “reasonable cause to believe.” The organization said it plans legal action and warned that other states may adopt similar measures. Supporters have described the rules as necessary measures for child protection.
Meanwhile, Statista’s Consumer Insights survey indicates inflation and the cost of living rose nine percentage points to rank first among American concerns in the 2025/26 wave. Health and social security fell eight points from the prior survey. Immigration concerns declined, while housing rose from 14th to the top tier. Poverty was cited by 33 percent of respondents, up slightly from 2019/20. Climate change dropped to 14th place. Six of the eight most-cited issues are social.

Ukrainian drone strikes on May 30-31 ignited fires at Russian oil facilities in Rostov and Krasnodar regions, damaging an oil depot and tanker in Taganrog and a depot in Armavir. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated Ukraine is “rightfully bringing the war back to where it came from.” Russian sources have claimed air defenses intercepted large numbers of drones while conducting their own strikes on Ukrainian targets.
Meanwhile, in a recap of the ninety days since U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran began on February 28, global markets lost roughly 1 billion barrels of crude and condensate supply, according to Kpler data. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz fell about 90 percent, leading producers to shut in more than 10 million barrels per day. Qatar halted LNG production on March 2. Global stocks outside China are declining at nearly 1.7 million barrels per day. Saudi Arabia is exporting via Yanbu on the Red Sea, and the UAE is expanding Fujairah capacity. Vortexa data shows vessels traversing Hormuz with transponders disabled. Some reports indicate partial easing of restrictions, with limited traffic resuming under coordination.
Economy
Approximately one million potential American car buyers have exited the new-vehicle market since 2020, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Average new-vehicle prices approach $50,000. Annual sales have settled near or below 16 million units. Automakers have shifted focus to higher-margin pickups, SUVs, and premium trims. Used-vehicle prices have risen, and the average age of cars and light trucks on U.S. roads is now about 13 years.
Health
In a recent essay, A Midwestern Doctor contends that public health authorities have downplayed broad-spectrum therapies for respiratory infections. The author states that most respiratory viruses replicate initially in the upper airway and that early nasal disinfection can limit progression. A randomized trial of 1,252 COVID-19 patients found that a DMSO-containing oral spray with zinc iodide and xylitol reduced symptomatic cases from 68 percent to 3 percent by day seven, according to the essay. The piece cites prior studies on DMSO for sinus conditions.
Artificial Intelligence
Investor Michael Burry described the NVIDIA-xAI arrangement as “Fugazi,” alleging that billions in chips are held off balance sheets. NVIDIA sold $5.4 billion of GB200 GPUs to Valor, a special-purpose vehicle, and invested an additional $1.9 billion. Apollo provided $3.5 billion in debt packaged into securities sold to Athene, which markets annuities to retirees. Athene has transferred $217 billion to a Bermuda captive insurer, with 34.7 percent classified as Level 3 assets. The arrangement has been characterized by some as standard equipment lease financing rather than an opaque scheme.
Environment
The USDA plans to close the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Maryland, including the Beltsville Bee Research Lab. The decision follows winter 2025 colony losses exceeding 60 percent for many beekeepers and an estimated 1.7 million colonies lost nationwide. The USDA cited $500 million in deferred maintenance. Honey bees contribute roughly $15 billion annually to U.S. crop production. The administration also proposes eliminating the USGS Ecosystems Mission Area and closing 57 of 77 Forest Service research stations. The closure has been described by some as a consolidation of research to other facilities for greater efficiency.
