Health
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has released a report on youth gender medicine, advocating for psychotherapy over immediate medical interventions like puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones. This report, prompted by an executive order from President Trump, suggests a shift towards a more cautious and evidence-based approach to treating gender dysphoria in youth. However, critics argue that this report could lead to the denial of necessary medical care for transgender youth, potentially increasing mental health issues among this vulnerable population.
Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, head of NIH and a prominent figure in the discourse on the origins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has announced a comprehensive release of all NIH documents related to COVID-19 in response to congressional subpoenas. This move aims to provide insight into the U.S. government’s knowledge and discussions during the early stages of the pandemic. Some have criticized this move, suggesting it might lead to misinformation if not handled with care, and have called for a balanced approach to transparency.
Bhattacharya also confirmed that U.S. taxpayer money indirectly funded experiments at the Wuhan lab. These experiments were part of a broader research initiative. The funding came through the NIH, which has been reported to support gain-of-function research, a practice that involves enhancing the pathogenicity or transmissibility of viruses. However, there are differing views on the implications of this funding, with some suggesting it could have been a significant oversight, potentially leading to the global health crisis.
According to a Brownstone article, further scrutiny has fallen on Ralph Baric, a U.S. virologist, whose work on coronaviruses has been at the center of speculation about the virus’s creation. Baric’s involvement in the DEFUSE project, which proposed engineering a virus similar to SARS-CoV-2, did not receive funding from DARPA but continued under different grants. This research included plans to infect wild Chinese bats with engineered viruses, a project later taken over by Dr. Vincent Munster’s team, which won funding for a self-spreading vaccine approach. The collaboration between Baric and Munster’s teams under the CREID project potentially led to the creation of a transmissible virus-vaccine, which might have been tested at the WIV, according to some reports. However, Baric has publicly denied any direct involvement in the creation of SARS-CoV-2, emphasizing the importance of understanding the virus’s origins through scientific inquiry rather than political rhetoric.
US Politics
Elon Musk and the DOGE team have revealed misuse of a $4 billion COVID relief fund by the Department of Education, where funds were allegedly used for lavish parties at venues like Caesars Palace and stadiums without any receipts required. Following this, a policy change now requires receipts for fund withdrawals. Additionally, the US Institute of Peace has come under scrutiny for what sources describe as a cover-up involving weapons, payments to the Taliban, and the deletion of financial records, leading to referrals to the FBI and DOJ. However, some insiders argue that the fund was initially set up with good intentions, and the lack of receipts was an oversight rather than a deliberate attempt to enable fraud.
DOGE also revealed the United States Postal Service (USPS) has been operating at a loss since 2007, contravening a law that mandates a balanced budget. This situation has led to discussions about accountability and the need for modernization within the USPS. However, some argue that the narrative of the USPS simply breaking the law by not balancing its budget oversimplifies the complex financial and operational challenges the service faces.
In another development, a federal judge has issued a ruling banning Border Patrol from making warrantless arrests of undocumented immigrants, following the controversial Operation Return to Sender. This judicial decision adds complexity to the ongoing debate over immigration enforcement. The Border Patrol Union has criticized the ruling, stating that it hampers their ability to secure the border effectively, potentially leading to increased illegal entries.
The USDA has introduced a new portal for farmers, ranchers, and producers to report harassment by federal or state agencies directly to Secretary Brooke Rollins. This initiative follows several cases where producers reportedly felt unfairly targeted. Environmental groups have expressed concerns that the portal might be used to bypass environmental regulations, potentially leading to increased land misuse by producers.
Economy
Japan’s Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato has hinted at using Japan’s $1.1 trillion in US Treasury holdings as leverage in trade negotiations with the US, potentially selling them if tariffs are imposed. Analysts have expressed concerns about the economic repercussions for both nations, suggesting a possible short-term spike in US yields and long-term economic instability for Japan.
Tether, a leading stablecoin issuer, is reportedly planning to launch a new product in the US market by the end of this year or early next, aiming to expand its market dominance. Tether’s flagship USDT currently holds a 66% market share, predominantly outside the US. Despite Tether’s dominance, Circle’s USDC has seen accelerated adoption following President Trump’s election win, with a market cap over $60 billion.
Geopolitics
President Trump has imposed new sanctions on Iran targeting its oil and petrochemical exports, a move reportedly aimed at pressuring Iran into a new nuclear agreement. These sanctions could disrupt global oil markets, with oil prices reportedly jumping by 2%. Some analysts suggest that these sanctions might also serve as a strategic move against China, Iran’s largest oil buyer, potentially affecting global oil dynamics and straining U.S.-China relations further.
European Politics
In Germany, the domestic intelligence agency has officially labeled the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as a right-wing extremist threat to democracy. This classification reportedly allows for closer monitoring of the party, which has seen an increase in popularity. Some critics argue that this classification is politically motivated, pointing out that the AfD’s policies are supported by a significant portion of the German electorate.

From Lab to Pandemic: The Controversial Journey of SARS-CoV-2
The key difference between Baric’s DEFUSE and Munster’s PREEMPT proposal – aside from Munster’s proposal coming in around $4m cheaper at $10m – is that rather than relying on spraying bat caves with a non-transmissible virus-vaccine, Munster’s plan involved making the virus-vaccine transmit between the bats via aerosols.
