Over the last 18 months, the shortages and economic uncertainty of the nation have led to many people not only gardening but putting back food by canning and other food preservation methods. Unfortunately, throughout the COVID-19 fiasco, some food preservation products have been in short supply.

Canning jars and lids are still hard to find in some areas. In other locations, the availability is sporadic. While canning is a great way to put back food, there are some clear disadvantages too. No food preservation method is perfect for all situations. It is likely in your best interest to use a variety of food preservation methods to keep your pantry stocked through good times and bad.

Many people have taken advantage of programs that make putting solar panels on their homes and tying to the grid very affordable. Unfortunately, these types of solar systems provide no backup power if the actual power grid is down. The main advantage to homeowners is that their power bill is significantly reduced or even eliminated. The power is fed back into the grid, but no battery backup system at home can be utilized if the main power grid fails.

It’s not the fall that hurts, it’s suddenly stopping.  In December 2019 the entire world, just-in-time global economy was humming along, a month later it metaphorically ran into a brick wall.

A stop so sudden that nobody has any clue how badly the system was harmed.  Because it’s a complex system it also means that nobody can predict any of the actual consequences.

Apple’s manufacturing process is complicated.  Apple’s supply chain from raw sand to finished phone is complex.  Things that are complicated can be modeled and resolved.  Things that are complex cannot.

It seems as if Mother Nature is waking up. Either she's trying to send humans an important warning, or perhaps she's just out to kill us all.

Massive storms across the globe, earthquakes, and collapsing ecosystems all combine to remind us that we are indeed intimately connected to our planet's natural systems. And that our well-being rests on staying on Mother Nature's good side.

Well, Mother Nature has seemed pretty pissed at us of late. Her recent punishments should be taken as a disciplinary wake-up call.
