No oil needed items

If oil becomes scarce or more likely expensive how will our lives really change? To start unpacking that thought I'd like for members to contribute to a list of items that do NOT have to use oil as an essential part of their manufacture.

To start off I will list some categories. Pleas expand this list.

Wood products made with animal based glues and plant based finishes:
furniture
stringed instruments (gut strings)
books

Plant based fabrics: cotton, wool, linen, silk

Metal & alloys that can be made with charcoal heat: brass

How about...

Animal-based materials: Leather and fur for clothes; boar bristles for hair brushes and paint brushes.  Bones for fishhooks and needles.  Feathers for pens.

Medicinal plants.

Paper (had to look that up, http://www.casepaper.com/company/paper-history/ ).  Oops, you already had books.

Bricks made from clay (http://brickcollecting.com/history.htm ).  Pottery too.

Egg tempura paint made with egg and ground pigments (although some pigments are toxic http://www.eggtempera.com/technical-info/pigments )

Fun exercise, aggrivated!

no oil needed

ceramic bowls, plates, cups. My ceramic artist neighbor has been making some with local clay in his local wood fired kiln

Wall surfaces/insulation : Ie., natural building. Walls outof Cob (dirt and straw mix) make a very compfortable home, we have a small building out of this, and after 15 years, can say it is still a great space aesthetically and very good temperature modulation

Roofing: Wood shingles, slate, clay tiles or straw

Wanna save $50,000 a year?

I thought that might get your attention. The next house, rental building, or office tower you build could have an investment just waiting to be tapped into. This piece is slightly dated, but was brought to my attention this morning as I pondered innovations for new construction. If it can work in the Great White North, why not in a facility close to you? No oil needed.

Pipe organs

Newer pipe organs from mid 20th century are now being refitted with longer lasting leather to replace cracking plastics. Also the tin and lead for the pipes can be purified and soldered without oil. Great music predates the oil dependent age.

Well, I was thinking something else when I happened upon this

While not built without oil, My electric car does not need oil the same way a 'standard' internal combustion engine does. Fossil oil can be repladced with plant and animal sources in many places, as WD40 is actually a fish oil.
