Folks, I’m going to have to do a shorter-than-usual write-up for this Finance U. The reason is I am engaging in last-minute preps as well as trying to stay on top of an extremely fast-breaking series of globally important events.
This episode goes into many of those events and how they will ripple across financial markets.
Regarding the Iran war, Paul Kiker and I discussed:
- How to invest in an era of maximum uncertainty
- The apparent suppression of US oil prices by “somebody.”
- The impact of the strikes on the South Pars gas field infrastructure by Israel, the strike of the Shah field by Iran, and various other grievous wounds to the world’s energy supplies
- Fertilizer shortages are leading to rapid and large price hikes that will translate into higher food prices later this year.
- Inflation (PPI) came in 2x higher than expected, and the survey was conducted before the Iran war broke out. Next month is going to be far higher. Because of this, the Federal Reserve is caught between a rock and a hard place.
- How all of this is rhyming with the double hump inflation of the 1973 to 1983 period.
- How this is no time to run a passive investment strategy. This is a time to practice extremely conservative risk management
We then switched gears to get back to the subject of AI’s impact on jobs. The future has arrived. Massive layoffs are being announced at all the major tech companies as they shed project managers and software engineers in favor of skinnied-down teams of vibe coders using AI.
Nobody really knows what this means, or how we’re going to handle so many formerly high-salary people losing their jobs all at once. It’s safe to say there’s no wisdom in DC at the moment, on either side of the aisle, to navigate such a wrenching cultural moment.
So it’s a narrative of shocks on top of shocks. Uncertainty squared.
