An Irish teacher, Enoch Burke, has been jailed for the third time over a transgender pronoun dispute. Burke, an evangelical Christian, was ordered by the High Court in Dublin to remain incarcerated for contempt after repeatedly defying a court order to stay away from Wilson’s Hospital School in County Westmeath. Burke was initially suspended in August 2022 for refusing to use a transgender student’s preferred pronouns and has since been dismissed, though he remains on the payroll pending an appeal. Justice Michael Quinn ruled that Burke was in “ongoing contempt” of previous court orders. Burke, who has already spent over 400 days in prison, argues that his religious rights are being violated. A review hearing is scheduled for October 11.

Meanwhile, the Biden-Harris Department of Justice (DOJ) has threatened to sue two small Wisconsin towns, Thornapple and Lawrence, for not using electronic voting machines, which allegedly violates the Help America Vote Act of 2002. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke warned that the towns’ failure to provide accessible voting equipment for people with disabilities during the April presidential primary election could lead to litigation unless a consent decree is negotiated. Despite this, Thornapple continued to use hand-counted paper ballots in the August primary. Suzanne Pinnow, Thornapple’s Treasurer, disputed claims that voters with disabilities were unable to vote due to the lack of accessible machines. Disability Rights Wisconsin (DRW) filed a complaint, arguing that the towns’ exclusive use of paper ballots disenfranchises disabled voters. The Wisconsin Elections Commission issued guidance mandating accessible voting equipment for all elections. Town officials cited concerns about election security and potential hacking of voting machines as reasons for their decision.

In the United States, Neil Howe’s “fourth turning” theory is gaining attention as it discusses the cyclical nature of societal restructuring. Howe, a demographer and co-author of “The Fourth Turning,” suggests that American society is currently in a phase marked by significant upheaval, driven by generational and ideological conflicts. He emphasizes the need for a massive restructuring of public priorities, particularly in the context of the large public sector focused on redistributing income to older Americans. Howe foresees increased public spending, higher taxes, more debt issuance, and inflation as potential responses to these challenges. He advises caution with long-term nominally denominated assets and suggests investments in real assets and sectors like defense manufacturing. Howe remains optimistic, believing that adversity can strengthen democracy and lead to necessary changes.

Geopolitics

In New York, Linda Sun, a former top aide to Governor Kathy Hochul, has been arrested on federal charges for acting as an undisclosed agent of China and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Sun is accused of advancing CCP interests within the state government in exchange for substantial financial rewards. She allegedly blocked Taiwanese representatives from meeting with New York officials and influenced Hochul’s messaging on China and Taiwan. Sun and her husband, Chris Hu, were arrested at their Long Island home, which included luxury cars like a 2024 Ferrari. The indictment claims Sun engaged in political activities at the behest of Chinese officials and laundered money to purchase expensive properties and luxury items. Sun faces multiple charges, including violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act and money laundering conspiracy. The governor’s office has distanced itself from Sun, stating she was terminated in March 2023 after evidence of misconduct was discovered.
