Recent releases of Jeffrey Epstein documents include emails referencing Bill Gates, Melanie Walker, and others in discussions on a “strain pandemic simulation” and pandemic planning. Walker, a former Gates Foundation executive and WHO adviser, forwarded correspondence involving Epstein, Gates, and figures like Larry Cohen on deliverables from bgC3, a Gates venture, according to the documents. Department of Energy documents reportedly reference logistical explorations into Wuhan coronavirus origins, including potential lab leaks, rushed research for Johns Hopkins’ Event 201 simulation, and furin-cleavage sites suggesting recombination.
Other files include a 2011 email from Epstein to JPMorgan’s Mary Erdoes proposing an offshore arm for vaccines in a donor-advised fund structure. Boris Nikolic, Gates’ science adviser, reportedly referenced pandemics as an investment category alongside energy. An iMessage thread mentions career paths including Swiss Re’s pandemic reinsurance with parametric triggers, predating World Bank bonds listing coronavirus perils. A 2013 agreement shows Gates requesting Epstein as Nikolic’s representative with indemnification.
Lastly, House Oversight Chairman James Comer said audio, video, and transcripts from Bill and Hillary Clinton’s Epstein depositions will be released publicly soon after their compliance. Comer noted the Clintons agreed to filmed, transcribed depositions following subpoena resistance. Bill Gates’ spokesperson described related claims in the files as “absolutely absurd and completely false.”
Energy & Geopolitics
Iranian gunboats approached a U.S.-flagged oil tanker in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, issuing orders to stop and prepare for boarding, according to maritime security firm Vanguard Tech and U.S. officials. The tanker accelerated and received escort from a U.S. warship. No shots were fired or damage reported, though Iran’s Fars News Agency denied the incident. Separately, an Iranian Shahed-139 drone approached the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea. A U.S. Central Command statement said an F-35C fighter jet from the carrier shot down the drone in self-defense. No injuries occurred, and the White House confirmed the drone was unmanned, while Iranian sources claimed it completed a surveillance mission. The incidents coincided with increased U.S. naval presence and reduced tanker availability on Middle East routes, along with rises in freight rates, WTI crude to $63 per barrel, and Brent to around $66 per barrel. The Strait of Hormuz handles 20% of global oil trade.

U.S. homebuilders, including Lennar and Taylor Morrison, are preparing a proposal for up to one million entry-level homes, according to reports citing a housing shortage estimated at 4.7 to 5 million units. The plan would involve private investors funding homes through a rent-to-own model, with three years of rent payments counting toward a down payment. Dubai-based Emaar Properties founder Mohammed Alabbar reportedly proposed a $400 billion program to build millions of units, potentially creating 20 million jobs. Lennar CEO Stuart Miller said the company is positioned to supply affordable housing once demand increases through lower rates or government programs. Pretium Co-President Stephen Scherr described a model linking builders with rent-to-own structures. Shares of Lennar and similar companies rose after the reports. A White House official said the administration is not actively considering the plan. A Taylor Morrison spokesperson expressed encouragement over discussions, though critics argue the model does not address core supply issues such as zoning reforms.
European Politics
France’s cybercrime unit raided X’s Paris office as part of a probe into the distribution of sexual deepfakes and Holocaust denial content, alongside Europol. The Paris prosecutor’s office summoned Elon Musk and former CEO Linda Yaccarino for questioning on April 20 regarding alleged complicity, including child abuse images via X’s Grok chatbot. This follows the European Commission’s expanded Digital Services Act investigation into X. The prosecutor’s office said it would post exclusively on LinkedIn and Instagram, avoiding X. Musk described the raid as a political attack. Other platforms have not been targeted despite reportedly being able to produce the same objectionable content as X.
US Politics
The House passed a funding deal negotiated by President Trump with Senate Democrats, ending a partial government shutdown after four days. The measure, approved 217-214, provides full-year funding for Defense, Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development departments. It extends Department of Homeland Security funding to January 13. House Speaker Mike Johnson used Republican votes for passage despite Democratic opposition over DHS reforms and ICE practices and conservative objections, including from Rep. Thomas Massie over blocked amendments. Trump urged conservatives to support the bill amid procedural challenges.
In other news, Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 46-year-old Larry Temah, a New Orleans Police Department recruit from Cameroon, one week before his academy graduation. Temah entered the U.S. legally on a visitor visa in 2015 and gained conditional residency via marriage in 2016, but his permanent residency was denied for fraud in 2022. He missed three court appearances, resulting in an in absentia deportation order. NOPD issued him a firearm despite his lack of work authorization. ICE described this as a felony for non-citizens without authorization. DHS criticized New Orleans sanctuary policies for ignoring detainers. NOPD stated it verified Temah’s eligibility via E-Verify and received no ICE detainer.
Health
Media reported a Nipah virus outbreak in eastern India, leading to airport screenings and travel warnings after two cases in health workers. Nipah virus was identified in a 1998 Malaysian encephalitis outbreak that killed 105 of 265 cases. It spreads from fruit bats via intermediates like pigs and has recurred in India, with under 1,000 global deaths since discovery. The World Health Organization and media have described Nipah as an emerging threat, though Indian authorities described the current situation as contained. Critics say emphasis on such outbreaks diverts resources from higher-burden diseases like malaria and tuberculosis.
