US Politics

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has scheduled a meeting with Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted associate of Jeffrey Epstein, to discuss potential information related to a list of associates, amid public and political interest. Additionally, a House panel voted to subpoena Maxwell for a deposition while she remains in federal prison. However, House Speaker Mike Johnson has decided to adjourn early, thus postponing a vote (until September) on fully releasing Epstein documents. The Hill reports that Johnson’s office defends the adjournment as standard practice unrelated to the Epstein documents, citing the need for members to address district business.

In other news, the DOJ has released information to the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server during her time as Secretary of State, following a request for greater transparency. Politico suggests the timing and selective release of information might be politically motivated, potentially reigniting past controversies rather than purely serving transparency.

Health

A Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) investigation found that in 103 out of 351 reviewed cases, organ donations were authorized for patients still showing signs of life by Network for Hope, a federally funded organization. The probe identified instances of families being approached under circumstances where they may not have fully understood the decisions, leading HHS to call for stricter policies and oversight. Medical Ethics Review counters that while concerning, these incidents should not overshadow the life-saving benefits of the organ donation system, advocating for a balanced reform approach.

Separately, a lawsuit filed against HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claims the department has not established a required task force on childhood vaccine safety as mandated by the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act. Supported by Children’s Health Defense, the suit seeks to enforce compliance with legal obligations to enhance vaccine safety and submit biennial reports to Congress. An HHS spokesperson has responded that, despite the absence of a formal task force, the agency actively pursues vaccine safety through other initiatives and collaborations.

Economy

Data shows record short positions by silver swap dealers, rising borrow and lease rates for silver, and a 200 million-ounce increase in COMEX warehouse stock, pointing to a divergence between paper and physical markets, according to recent analyses by industry observers. However, some market experts suggest these fluctuations are within normal ranges and not necessarily indicative of systemic stress, emphasizing typical supply and demand dynamics.

On the trade front, President Trump announced a new agreement with Japan, describing it as a major deal. The agreement sets tariffs on Japanese imports at 15% and includes a reported commitment from Japan to invest $550 billion in the US, along with opening markets for American automobiles and agricultural products like rice. Specific details of the deal remain limited, and Japanese government bond yields have risen, which some market analysts attribute to uncertainty. Bloomberg reports additional concerns about the lack of clarity on whether Japanese automobiles and parts will be exempt from higher tariffs, contributing to market unease.

Geopolitics

Japan has seen a political shift with the nationalist Sanseito party increasing its seats from one to 15 in the upper house, becoming the third-largest opposition party. Led by Sohei Kamiya, the party emphasizes immigration control and opposition to certain international policies, gaining support among voters focused on cultural preservation, according to political analysts. Conversely, Reuters notes international concerns that such nationalist movements could lead to isolationism and strain global trade relationships.

In other international developments, reports indicate that US nuclear weapons may return to UK soil at RAF Lakenheath for the first time in over 15 years, interpreted by some sources as a signal to Russia amid ongoing negotiations related to the Ukraine conflict. The Kremlin is said to be monitoring the situation closely. The Moscow Times, however, reports that Russia downplays the significance of this potential transfer, viewing it as not altering the strategic balance.

Meanwhile, in Ukraine, large protests have emerged against President Volodymyr Zelensky, triggered by a parliamentary decision to limit the independence of the anti-corruption bureau, coinciding with upcoming peace talks with Russia. Reuters clarifies that while protests are occurring, they are not as widespread as some suggest, and peace talks remain on track according to official statements.

Energy

Electricity costs are expected to rise as PJM Interconnection, the largest US power grid serving 65 million people across 13 states and Washington, DC, announced capacity prices of $329.17 per megawatt daily. This increase, attributed to high demand from AI data centers in regions like Virginia, along with retiring power plants and delays in grid upgrades, will result in businesses and households paying $16.1 billion for supply starting June 2026. Some stakeholders have raised concerns about the pricing mechanism, according to industry reports, while power producers are expected to see financial gains from the price surge. Reuters notes that some experts argue the price hike is not solely due to AI data centers but also reflects broader issues like aging infrastructure and insufficient investment in new capacity.
