US & EU Politics

Marine Le Pen has been barred from running for the French presidency in 2027 due to her conviction for misappropriating EU funds. This ruling has sparked varied reactions, with support from figures like Viktor Orban and criticism from Italy’s Matteo Salvini. In France, political figures across the spectrum have expressed discomfort, emphasizing that political debates should be resolved at the ballot box. Le Pen plans to appeal the verdict, which includes a four-year prison sentence with two years suspended. If her appeal fails, the National Rally may need to select a new candidate, potentially causing internal challenges. The case raises concerns about the separation of powers and perceived double standards in European politics.

Observers have drawn parallels with Donald Trump’s legal battles in the U.S., noting that like Le Pen, Trump has faced legal challenges while maintaining strong voter support. Indeed, Trump has commented on Marine Le Pen’s sentencing, drawing parallels to U.S. politics and suggesting that the situation in France mirrors challenges faced in the U.S.

Relatedly, Trump has stated that the UK will not receive a trade deal until free speech is restored, highlighting ongoing tensions in international relations. Some UK politicians view Trump’s demand as an overreach into British domestic affairs, arguing that the UK’s trade policy should not be dictated by foreign leaders’ domestic political agendas.

In the US, Congressional Republicans in both the House and Senate are advocating to limit judicial authority for nationwide injunctions, arguing that district court judges should not have the power to indefinitely block policies. This move is part of a broader effort to address what they perceive as judicial overreach, particularly in cases opposing President Trump’s agenda. Democrats have criticized this as an attempt to influence judges.

Energy & the Economy

The U.S. faces ongoing challenges with Used Nuclear Fuel (UNF), with 90,000 metric tons stored across 39 states. Despite Congress collecting over $20 billion for UNF removal, significant progress has not been made. A proposed approach suggests recycling UNF into mixed oxide fuel (MOX fuel), which can power nuclear reactors. This policy could address the national obligation to move UNF, restart the payment program for UNF removal, mitigate storage concerns near population centers, and replace the 20% of U.S. nuclear fuel currently imported from Russia. Recycling technology, initially developed in the U.S., is already used in countries like France and Japan, presenting a potential solution to the nuclear waste issue. However, environmental groups have raised concerns about the safety and proliferation risks associated with recycling nuclear waste, arguing that it could lead to the spread of nuclear weapons technology.

Adding to the complexities of nuclear energy policy, the world faces shrinking per-capita energy consumption from traditional sources like oil, coal, and uranium, a trend that has persisted since its peak in 2007, according to Gail Tverberg’s March analysis. Advanced Economies, including the U.S., are particularly vulnerable as their energy consumption has declined significantly since 2005, exacerbating financial pressures due to rising debt levels used to offset these limits. Tverberg warns that this resource contraction could push these economies toward financial collapse, potentially undermining ambitious plans like recycling Used Nuclear Fuel (UNF) into MOX fuel. As energy scarcity drives up costs and strains government budgets, the feasibility of large-scale nuclear recycling programs may be tested, complicating efforts to address both the UNF stockpile and reliance on foreign nuclear fuel.

Geopolitics

In a recent post by James Howard-Kunstler, he details several “uncomfortable things” converging at the same time. These include the Russia-Ukraine war, DOGE investigating the CIA, the Epstein files, COVID revelations, and activist judges. In particular, the Ukraine conflict is reportedly nearing a conclusion, with The New York Times revealing that the Pentagon and CIA have been directing Ukraine’s operations, aiming to destabilize Russia. However, sanctions have reportedly strengthened Russia’s economy. European leaders, such as Germany’s Friedrich Merz and France’s Emmanuel Macron, are making military commitments despite domestic challenges. In the UK, PM Keir Starmer’s call for intervention in Ukraine is met with skepticism. Meanwhile, in the U.S., developments include the revisiting of the Epstein case and potential changes in the Covid-19 narrative, with discussions around vaccine-related issues possibly prompting changes in the public health system.
